REGENT is building Seagliders—wing-in-ground-effect craft that travel just above water at 180 mph with 180-mile range on current battery technology. The company is scaling from prototype to full production and seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to establish and lead the energy storage systems (ESS) function from the ground up. This is a new role with significant ownership and strategic influence. You will design, build, and test battery packs for Seagliders, taking energy storage work from concept through validated hardware. Key responsibilities include: - Hands-on design and testing of cells, modules, and complete battery systems - High-voltage distribution and thermal runaway mitigation for marine environments - Cell selection and evaluation based on technology, behavior, and lifecycle - Thermal analysis, FEA, and tolerance stack-up analysis to inform design decisions - Design for manufacturability, cost, and redundancy - Support for Conceptual and Critical Design Reviews, functional and environmental testing, and certification processes - Strategic guidance on in-house development versus integration partnerships for ESS work - Support for Squire and Viceroy production integration and certification efforts You will work directly with the Mechanical Engineering team in a fast-paced startup environment, shaping processes and technical foundations that will support the function for years to come. The role offers rare opportunity to define how REGENT approaches energy storage without an existing playbook. REQUIREMENTS: - Deep battery expertise: understanding of cell technology, behavior, and lifecycle at expert level - Expert knowledge of HV distribution and thermal runaway mitigation; ability to design thermal management systems for real-world conditions - Strong mechanical engineering foundation: proficiency with thermal analysis, FEA, and tolerance stack-up analysis as core tools - Design philosophy grounded in manufacturability, cost, and redundancy from concept stage - Hands-on testing experience with cells, modules, and complete battery systems - Experience negotiating requirements for battery and electrical systems with partners - Real experience with battery certification processes - Strong communication skills and collaborative team instincts BONUS EXPERIENCE: - HV EV battery design in aerospace, maritime, or automotive settings - 3D CAD design and prototyping/production manufacturing of battery components - Material selection for marine environments - MATLAB, Simulink, or Python for analysis and simulation - Experience with high-power electric propulsion systems or power electronics - Builder mentality and comfort shaping new functions from scratch - Mission-driven approach to engineering work
