ixigo, India's leading online travel aggregator (OTA), is seeking a Principal Engineer - Backend to lead the design, architecture, and deployment of scalable server-side software applications. You will own end-to-end module development, working closely with product managers, design, and quality teams to build and launch features across ixigo's travel booking platform (flights, trains, buses, hotels, cabs).
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, develop, and architect backend features for the existing application
- Own modules end-to-end with accountability for code quality and product delivery
- Design and maintain highly scalable, multi-tier, distributed server applications
- Deliver across the full app lifecycle: design, build, deploy, test, release, and support
- Collaborate with developers and product managers on conceptualization, testing, and release
- Take responsibility for performance and stability of all server functions
- Discover, evaluate, and implement new technologies to maximize development efficiency
- Provide hands-on technical leadership and mentorship within an informal startup environment
The role emphasizes strong product thinking, scalability expertise, and the ability to drive both technical excellence and team performance.
Qualifications:
- 5–6 years of software engineering experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Engineering (preferably from IITs or top Indian engineering colleges)
- Expert-level proficiency in Java/J2EE and design patterns
- Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, memory management, and multithreaded programming
- Expertise in relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB)
- Experience designing for performance, scalability, and high availability
- Proficiency in implementing algorithms and advanced data structures
- Knowledge of Web services and REST APIs
- Experience with e-business/e-commerce applications
- Good to have: Python, Node.js, Redis, Elasticsearch
- Experience with internet companies or travel industry is a plus
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to thrive in a startup environment and provide hands-on management
- High energy and commitment to driving team goals
