Salary: USD 175,000 - 200,000 / annual
Root Insurance is seeking a Principal-level actuarial professional to join its Corporate Actuarial team. This is a hands-on technical leadership role focused on capital modeling, enterprise risk management (ERM), reinsurance strategy, and reserving activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, enhance, and maintain internal capital models to inform risk appetite, reinsurance decisions, and financial strategy
- Conduct stress testing, ORSA scenario development, and economic capital modeling
- Implement and refine ERM frameworks, risk registers, and related processes across the organization
- Evaluate and structure reinsurance arrangements (quota share, excess of loss, catastrophe) and model their financial impact on earnings volatility, surplus preservation, and RBC
- Partner with Corporate Actuarial teammates on monthly reserving analyses and processes
- Analyze reserve adequacy trends and variances across lines of business
- Support regulatory filings and the appointed actuary
- Drive cross-functional collaboration with Data Science, Finance, Accounting, Underwriting, and Claims teams
- Present technical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Contribute to process automation and actuarial tool development using R, Python, SQL, and GenAI
- Mentor junior team members and manage direct reports as needed
Root is an insurtech company using machine learning and mobile telematics to transform car insurance. The company operates on a "work where it works best" model with headquarters in Columbus, Ohio, but supports remote work across the US.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, or related rigorous mathematics field (preferred)
- ACAS or FCAS credential
- 6+ years of P&C insurance actuarial experience, preferably with exposure to capital modeling, ERM, reinsurance, and/or reserving
- Proficiency in R or Python, SQL, and GenAI tools
- Familiarity with capital modeling tools; custom modeling experience is a plus
- Strong ability to collaborate across functional areas and communicate actuarial insights effectively
- Self-starter mindset with strong analytical skills and attention to detail
- Willingness to mentor junior team members and/or manage direct reports
- Occasional travel may be required for team meetings, broker discussions, or industry events
