Proxima Fusion, Europe's fastest-growing and best-funded fusion company, is seeking a Power Electronics Engineer to join its Zurich office. The company is developing hardware and infrastructure for the world's first commercial stellarator fusion power plant, building on the mature Wendelstein 7-X stellarator technology through next-generation machines Alpha and Stellaris.
In this role, you will architect and develop cutting-edge power conversion technologies for fusion systems, combining high power density, high voltage and current, fast dynamic response, and demanding efficiency and reliability requirements. You will translate functional and system requirements into robust power-stage solutions that optimize efficiency, thermal performance, reliability, scalability, and power density.
Key responsibilities include:
- Evaluating and developing power conversion topologies for converters, considering performance, efficiency, electrical stresses, thermal behavior, reliability, power density, and system requirements
- Designing and developing magnetic components such as inductors, transformers, and chokes, including selection of magnetic materials, core geometries, winding concepts, and evaluation of losses and thermal limitations
- Developing analytical and simulation models to evaluate converter behavior, semiconductor stresses, switching and conduction losses, efficiency, and performance across relevant operating conditions
- Building prototypes and performing laboratory testing, characterization, verification, troubleshooting, and validation of power electronic circuits and converter stages
- Analyzing test results and correlating measurements with simulations and calculations to identify design improvements and validate converter performance
You will work closely with colleagues across integrated electronics, embedded software, mechanical, thermal, and system engineering, contributing to a multidisciplinary team combining cutting-edge simulation with hands-on engineering.
Requirements:
- University degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or related field
- Demonstrated experience taking power-stage designs from initial concept and simulation through component selection, prototype implementation, laboratory measurement, debugging, and validation
- Expert-level knowledge of power conversion topologies, power semiconductors, magnetic components, and passive components
- Experience with electro-thermal simulation tools such as PLECS is a plus
- Experience with SiC or GaN semiconductors and high-frequency magnetics is a plus
