Beacon Software acquires, operates, and grows vertical market software companies—niche, founder-built businesses serving overlooked industries. The company holds these businesses permanently and accelerates their growth with an AI-native platform.
As a Portfolio Software Engineer, you will work directly alongside the engineering teams of 2–3 portfolio companies at a time, embedded in their codebases and decision-making processes. You are not a consultant or contractor; you are a hands-on engineer who brings agentic development practices, architectural guidance, and operational excellence to small, resource-constrained teams.
Your responsibilities include:
- Accelerating feature delivery by introducing modern development practices and shipping capabilities (moving teams from weeks to days).
- Responding to and resolving production incidents, identifying root causes, and implementing systemic fixes.
- Reviewing architectural and design decisions before implementation.
- Supporting hiring and candidate interviews for companies running their first formal hiring processes.
- Identifying and automating manual, time-consuming processes that drain leadership bandwidth.
- Teaching AI coding tools and modern development workflows to engineers who have had limited headroom to adopt them.
- Exercising independent judgment on technical and strategic decisions, often as the only Beacon representative in the room.
You will context-switch across multiple companies weekly, requiring comfort with rapid onboarding and the ability to make high-impact contributions quickly. Success depends on earning trust through competence, humility, and a genuine commitment to leaving each team stronger than you found it.
Beacon is backed by $550M+ in funding from General Catalyst, Lightspeed, D1 Capital, and family offices of Stripe, DoorDash, and Ramp founders.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience across multiple technology stacks; no religious attachment to any single stack.
- Demonstrated judgment and decision-making ability; comfort operating independently without committee approval.
- Strong product intuition; ability to identify which roadmap items drive disproportionate value.
- Self-directed initiative; you identify and prioritize work without a handed-down backlog.
- Comfort with frequent context switching across 3+ companies in a single week.
- Collaborative mindset and ability to build trust with engineering teams quickly.
- Daily proficiency with AI coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude, etc.) and ability to mentor others in their use.
