Beacon Software acquires, operates, and grows vertical market software companies—niche, founder-built businesses serving overlooked industries. The company holds these businesses permanently and accelerates their growth with an AI-native platform.
As a Portfolio Software Engineer, you will work directly alongside the engineering teams of 2–3 portfolio companies at a time, embedded in their codebases and decision-making processes. You are not a consultant or contractor; you are a hands-on engineer who brings agentic development capabilities, architectural guidance, and operational excellence to small, resource-constrained teams.
Your responsibilities include:
- Accelerating feature delivery by teaching teams to ship in days instead of weeks, then ensuring they can sustain that pace independently.
- Responding to production incidents: diagnosing root causes, fixing systemic issues, and preventing recurrence.
- Reviewing architectural and design decisions before implementation to ensure quality and scalability.
- Supporting hiring and candidate interviews for companies running their first formal hiring processes.
- Identifying and automating manual, time-consuming processes that drain leadership bandwidth.
- Context-switching fluidly across 2–3 companies per week, each with different tech stacks and business contexts.
You will report to Beacon's leadership and work in close partnership with founders and small engineering teams who have deep domain expertise but limited capacity for rapid scaling. Success means leaving each team measurably faster, more confident, and better equipped to execute independently.
Beacon is backed by $550M+ in funding from General Catalyst, Lightspeed, D1 Capital, and family offices of Stripe, DoorDash, and Ramp founders.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience across multiple technology stacks; no religious attachment to any single stack.
- Strong independent judgment and decision-making ability; you will often be the only Beacon representative in the room.
- Ability to identify high-impact work and prioritize ruthlessly ("which roadmap item pays for the other nine").
- Self-directed initiative; you find and define your own work rather than following a handed-down backlog.
- Comfort with rapid context switching and working across diverse codebases and teams.
- Collaborative, trust-building interpersonal skills; engineers must earn confidence in you through your actions.
- Daily proficiency with AI coding tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude, etc.) and ability to teach others to use them effectively.
