Salary: USD 230,000 - 265,000 / annual
Anthropic is seeking a Policy Research Strategist to join the Strategic Advisory team within the Public Policy group. This role focuses on developing and maintaining policy research strategy and leading research initiatives to strengthen Anthropic's policy influence in Washington and globally.
Key Responsibilities:
- Run policy development processes from open question to agreed position, framing questions, bringing in experts from research, legal, communications and regional policy teams, working through disagreements, and reaching decisions
- Develop research plans for priority issue areas, identifying what evidence would strengthen or test positions, what Anthropic's own data and research can show, and where outside partners are appropriate
- Work with Anthropic's research teams (economics research, Societal Impacts, Frontier Red Team) to turn findings into materials policymakers can use
- Manage commissioned research from scoping through publication and build partnerships with outside academics, think tanks, economists and consultancies
- Own economic impact reports and narratives for markets around the world
- Anticipate emerging policy issues and develop Anthropic's perspective and supporting materials before external pressure builds
- Scale team support for international markets by adapting strategy and materials for different governments and building templates and processes
- Draft briefings, talking points and other materials on short timelines, coordinating with policy communications
You will be a strong generalist who builds things and sees them through, turning complex research into clear, organized and useful materials. You are curious and rigorous about evidence, can distinguish strong studies from weak ones, and know when to bring in subject matter experts. You have good judgment, take initiative, and are comfortable when the path isn't defined. You can manage several research projects and outside partners simultaneously while tracking connections between them.
Requirements:
- Track record of driving cross-functional projects to decision or finished product, including getting people with competing interests to agreement without direct management authority
- Experience as a policy generalist across several issue areas, including designing and carrying out policy research and turning it into policy proposals or positions
- Ability to scope research questions, work with economists, academics and other experts to answer them, and judge quality of evidence and methods (e.g., through economic consulting, policy research organizations, or in-house research teams)
- Excellent writing skills: ability to turn complex technical or economic material into clear, concise memos, briefings and talking points for different audiences
- Understanding of how a company's commercial interests and policy positions fit together
- Strong organization and project management, including running multiple projects and outside partners simultaneously
- Record of working independently, taking ownership of problems, and driving next steps and deliverables without prompting
- Collaborative, low-ego approach; pitches in wherever work needs you and shares credit readily
- Interest in AI policy and alignment with Anthropic's mission to develop safe and beneficial AI
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5+ years of professional experience in technology policy, public affairs, consulting or related field
- Experience on in-house technology policy team, in corporate public affairs, or in management or economic consulting (especially public sector or policy practices)
- Experience managing outside vendors, research partners or commissioned studies, including economic impact studies
- Background in AI or technology policy
- Relationships with academics, think tanks or research organizations working on AI or technology policy
- Experience with international policy or supporting teams in multiple countries
- Training in economics or quantitative methods
Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience in a field relevant to the role.
