Fluidstack is building civilization-scale AI compute infrastructure, combining power generation, data center design, and operations. The company is focused on deploying 10–100s of GWs of compute faster than anyone else by rethinking every layer of the stack, from acquiring power and designing data centers to operating them at speed and scale.
The Power Generation team is solving frontier problems: building islanded grids at gigawatt scale from scratch, getting power online in months rather than years, creating repeatable power blocks that scale across a fleet, and designing grids where compute load is an active design variable rather than passive demand.
In this role, you will own the complete control stack for fully off-grid AI campuses. This includes the site energy management system (EMS), the plant controller for each power block, and dispatch logic across photovoltaic, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and gas generation as a single standard architecture that scales from one block to GW-scale campuses energized in six months.
Key responsibilities:
- Translate control philosophy into sequences of operation covering every operating mode, source transition, blackstart path, emergency shed, and degraded state, with each proven in simulation and hardware-in-the-loop before energization.
- Own the generation-side control contract between the power plant and data center, extending from one plant to many blocks feeding many buildings, with load reduction deadlines measured in seconds.
- Decide which components to acquire for speed versus which to build first, then replace bought pieces with proprietary code on a planned schedule, holding suppliers to specification and conformance tests.
- Build the controls test capability, plant model library, and hardware-in-the-loop bench for testing any controller before deployment.
- Lead controls commissioning and tuning in the field, including frequency and voltage response, load-step testing against real AI load profiles, and mode transitions.
- Hire and lead the controls software and test engineers who build the stack with you.
You will operate with full autonomy, own things end-to-end, and take on scope without permission. The team values insane urgency, first-principles reasoning, and building something that matters at civilization scale.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Proven ownership of plant controller or EMS on utility-scale hybrid plants combining at least two of: PV, BESS, thermal generation. Must be able to name specific sites and current megawatt dispatch.
- Experience writing sequences of operation for source transitions, blackstart, or islanding, with on-site commissioning of energized equipment (including failures).
- Shipped control software as a product: version-controlled, tested, released to running plants. Understand what changes when the loop closes on real turbine or inverter fleets.
- Brought third-party controllers or components into live plants to meet deadlines, held vendors to specification through factory and site acceptance, and later replaced with proprietary code without outages.
- Designed interfaces between control systems owned by different parties, with data, timing, and failure behavior documented and tested.
- Tuned plants in the field: frequency, voltage response, ramp rates, load steps. Can explain tradeoffs behind each setting.
- Write clearly for diverse audiences: OEM controls engineers, commissioning agents, and executives.
BONUS SKILLS:
- Islanded or weak-grid operation (island utilities, mining, remote microgrids, offshore).
- Real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop (RTDS, OPAL-RT, Typhoon HIL).
- Commercial plant controller platforms (FlexGen HybridOS, Tesla, Schneider EcoStruxure, SEL RTAC).
- Industrial control protocols and OT security (DNP3, IEC 61850, IEC 62443).
- Real-time and control software languages (Go, Rust, C++, IEC 61131-3).
