PowerX is seeking a P&C Test Engineer II to execute commissioning and testing scopes for protection and control systems in substations. This is a mid-level field engineering role that bridges entry-level task execution and senior-level independence.
You will work under the oversight of Senior or Lead Test Engineers on relay protection systems, breaker controls, CT/VT circuits, transformer protection, and substation equipment testing across distribution and transmission substations up to 765kV. The role emphasizes growing technical depth, independent system-level understanding, and decreasing reliance on step-by-step direction.
Key Responsibilities:
- Execute relay protection testing tasks using industry-standard platforms (Doble, Omicron, RTS, SEL AcSELerator, GE Enervista) with accurate documentation
- Perform relay input/output testing, analog-to-digital metering checks, element pickup and timing tests
- Execute CT and VT testing including ratio, polarity, phasing, and grounding verification
- Conduct breaker control circuit testing including trip path verification and functional tests
- Read and navigate one-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and panel layouts
- Apply developing knowledge of AC/DC power system fundamentals, protection zones, overcurrent/differential protection concepts, and breaker control circuits
- Navigate relay manufacturer instruction manuals and settings files
- Actively engage with POWERX Academy training and protection theory study
- Develop test plans and task-level isolation plans for routine scopes with senior review
- Review drawing packages prior to testing and identify questions or inconsistencies
- Maintain complete, accurate test records, redlines, and daily reports
- Support team members and demonstrate safe work practices
- Maintain safety-first culture, adhere to LOTO procedures, and apply Human Performance Improvement tools
- Perform live-dead-live checks independently on energized equipment tasks
- Maintain compliance with OSHA, NERC CIP, and utility requirements
- Communicate proactively with Senior or Lead regarding task status and concerns
- Participate in pre-job briefs, tailboards, and post-job reviews
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 1+ years of experience in high-voltage Protection & Control testing and commissioning
- Familiarity with SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, Westinghouse, or equivalent relay platforms
- Questioning attitude and high attention to detail
- Calm and methodical under outage windows and in energized substation environments
- Strong communication skills and customer-focused mentality
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel for test records and reports
- Ability to work safely around energized electrical equipment
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and travel as required
- Ability to work overtime and outage schedules
- Satisfactory background/MVR check and pass pre-employment drug test
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Technology, or Associate degree in related field
- Experience commissioning substations from 12.5kV through 245kV
- OSHA 30 certification
- Knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC) and OSHA Electrical Safe Work Practices
- First Aid / CPR certification
- Familiarity with NERC CIP requirements
