The P&C Senior Test Engineer is responsible for independent execution of testing, commissioning, and validation activities across transmission, distribution, and generation substations up to 765kV. This role operates with minimal supervision on assigned scopes and applies system-level understanding to protection testing while actively contributing to the development of less experienced team members.
Key responsibilities include:
- Independently execute relay protection testing using industry-standard platforms (Doble, Omicron, RTS, SEL AcSELerator, GE Enervista)
- Test and validate protection elements including line, transformer, bus, feeder, breaker failure, reclosing, and transfer trip schemes
- Perform CT/PT testing including ratio, polarity, phasing, saturation characteristics, and single-point grounding verification
- Execute complete relay input/output testing, analog-to-digital metering checks, and individual element pickup and timing tests
- Interpret relay logic, phasors, event reports, and oscillography to identify abnormal conditions
- Read and navigate one-lines, three-lines, schematics, and wiring diagrams
- Work in operational substations and construction environments
- Travel as required for project assignments
This role represents the critical developmental step between directed execution and full project ownership, building leadership habits, system-level awareness, and planning skills required for advancement to Lead positions.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Working knowledge of AC/DC power system fundamentals and complex power calculations
- Understanding of symmetrical components and relay element operation
- Knowledge of protection zones and coordination philosophy
- Understanding of instrument transformer behavior and application
- Knowledge of overcurrent, differential, impedance, and breaker failure protection applications
- Ability to work in operational substations and construction environments
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to travel as required
- Ability to work overtime and outage schedules as necessary
- Exposure tolerance to outdoor weather conditions, noise, vibration, heat, dust, oil, grease, and energized equipment environments
