Anduril Industries is a defense technology company transforming U.S. and allied military capabilities through advanced autonomy, AI, computer vision, and sensor fusion. The Maritime Division is scaling at historic pace, anchored by Arsenal-2, a new software-defined shipyard in Baltimore County, Maryland, as part of a $6.6 billion investment in America's submarine industrial base. The Proto-Factory in Orange County, California serves as the prototyping hub for Arsenal-2, proving out advanced manufacturing methods, digital workflows, and quality systems.
In this role, you will own mechanical design for payloads carried by maritime autonomous vehicles. Reporting to the Payload Lead, you will design payload housings, mounting structures, and mechanical interfaces that enable Anduril and third-party payloads to integrate into the vehicle. These systems must be pressure-rated, volume-constrained, and swappable in the field. Payload bays represent highly contested real estate on the vehicle, and this role is responsible for making them work effectively.
You will leverage both technical expertise and leadership skills to set objectives, build cross-functional teams, and rapidly drive projects to completion. Your intuition and prior experience will be critical in ensuring the right design, analysis, and test steps are completed for success. The ideal candidate will have executed and successfully completed highly optimized multi-disciplinary projects.
Key responsibilities include: owning mechanical design of payload housings, enclosures, and mounting structures; designing pressure-rated payload containment and penetrations for full-depth operation; defining modular mechanical interfaces for rapid field payload swap; managing volume, mass, and center-of-gravity budgets; performing structural and pressure analysis on payload assemblies; producing drawings, tolerance stackups, and interface control documents; partnering with Payload Electrical, Vehicle Interoperability, and Buoyancy & Trim teams on integration constraints; supporting prototype builds, integration testing, and at-sea validation; and traveling up to 25% to test sites and supplier facilities.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- 5+ years of mechanical design experience on hardware that was built and deployed
- Strong CAD proficiency and drawing release experience with GD&T
- Experience designing sealed, pressure-rated, or environmentally protected enclosures
- Working knowledge of structural analysis and hand calculations for load paths
- Experience managing mass, volume, and center-of-gravity budgets under tight constraints
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance
- Experience with subsea, marine, or deep-submergence mechanical design
- Familiarity with underwater connectors, penetrators, and pressure housings
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with modular or field-swappable hardware interfaces
- Background in payload integration for aircraft, spacecraft, or unmanned vehicles
- Experience in defense programs or third-party hardware integration
