Salary: USD 106,000 - 150,000 / annual
Inversion Space is an aerospace and defense company pioneering advanced reentry technology for next-generation space missions. The company designs and manufactures highly maneuverable reentry spacecraft (Arc) for rapid global cargo delivery, hypersonic testing, and national security applications. Headquartered in Los Angeles and backed by Y Combinator, Spark Capital, and Lockheed Martin Ventures, Inversion integrates design, manufacturing, and integration under one roof.
As a Parachute Systems Engineer II, you will play a critical role in designing, developing, and optimizing parachute systems for next-generation reentry vehicles. You will be a key member of the Accurate Landing Team, reporting directly to the Director of Engineering for Accurate Landing. This role offers the opportunity to work on early-stage vehicle design, define vehicle architecture, and solve novel engineering challenges.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop and own parachute systems from concept through manufacture
- Collaborate with customers to develop and satisfy design requirements
- Support testing and design of Arc's parachute and deployment systems
- Lead and support parachute hardware, mechanisms, and related systems
- Contribute to vehicle architecture and design innovation
This position requires in-office presence at the Playa Vista headquarters.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 2+ years of parachute design experience with significant project ownership
- Strong engineering design fundamentals
- Experience with textile design, including sewing, rigging, and hardware testing
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced startup environment
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government Secret/Top Secret security clearance
- ITAR compliance: Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or eligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with CAD and design software (GliderPlan, Openglider, LEparagliding, AutoCAD, NX, etc.)
- Experience organizing and executing drop tests or other testing
- Active U.S. security clearance
- USPA Class A Sport Parachute license
- FAA Senior Rigger Certification
- Mechanical and/or pyrotechnic system design experience
- Joint precision airdrop system (JPADS) design and testing experience
- Knowledge of simulation-based wing modeling, CFD, or wind tunnel testing
