Stand is building a new class of global property protection using advanced physics and AI to model catastrophic risk at the asset level. The company automates underwriting and mitigation before loss occurs, with a leadership team including former founders and CEOs from Metromile, PolicyGenius, WePay, and HotelTonight.
The Mitigation Engineer owns the Stand Protection Plan end-to-end for every inspected property. You will make vegetation, structure, and hazard assessments, ship accurate and defensible mitigation plans, and run Protection Review calls with homeowners and brokers to secure buy-in on recommendations.
Key responsibilities:
- Own the Stand Protection Plan for each inspected property, making critical vegetation, structure, and hazard determinations
- Run Protection Review calls to walk homeowners and brokers through plans, handle objections, and achieve agreement
- Identify rules that misfire and recommend automation opportunities as the company enters new markets
- Provide clear, written justification for requirements and their protective value
- Work at volume while maintaining accuracy and quality standards
You will work in a fast-moving environment where judgment, client-facing communication, and the ability to learn new tools quickly are essential. The role requires precision under pressure, the ability to defend decisions in writing, and empathetic communication with non-technical stakeholders.
Requirements:
- 2–5 years of experience in consulting, banking, big tech, or another analytically rigorous environment (trajectory matters more than tenure)
- Precision at volume: accuracy maintained as pace increases and queue deepens
- Client-facing capability: ability to run calls, handle pushback, and reach agreement without conceding critical scope
- Defensible judgment: ability to clearly articulate which requirements protect a home and why
- Speed in learning new tools: productive within days, opinionated within a week
- Clear, empathetic communication: ability to explain requirements and tradeoffs to non-technical audiences
Nice-to-haves:
- Property, construction, or home-inspection background
- Wildfire science, defensible space, or home-hardening knowledge
- GIS or aerial/imagery analysis experience
- Insurance experience, especially underwriting or risk assessment
- High-volume, accuracy-critical production work against a defined quality bar
