Tessl is a Series A startup building the context layer for AI coding agents and a platform for AI-native software development. This is a product engineering role with a platform focus. You'll spend most of your time designing, prototyping, and shipping product features end-to-end in collaboration with product, design, and engineering teams in a high-autonomy environment. What differentiates this role is your comfort diving below the application layer into infrastructure work: complex networking scenarios (site-to-site VPN, private connectivity), multi-cloud and multi-region deployments, observability, and the systems that make Tessl straightforward to deploy and operate.
You'll approach everything with an AI-native mindset: instead of triaging alerts manually, you'll build or deploy agents to handle diagnostics. Instead of reacting to scaling bottlenecks, you'll create systems that anticipate them. Deep expertise is foundational—you can't automate what you don't understand—but your ambition is to have agents handle the bulk of operational toil while you supervise and steer.
Within your first year, you'll ship product features like any Tessl engineer. When infrastructure work arises—deployment architecture, networking, observability—you'll own it and land it well. You'll strengthen deployment and operational practices, expand agentic tooling to handle growing operational work, and ensure infrastructure is compliant by default, supporting Tessl's ISO 27001 and SOC 2 journey.
Day-to-day work includes: designing and implementing new functionality end-to-end from prototypes to production; rapidly prototyping to validate ideas then planning scalable implementations; pairing with designers and engineers on intuitive UX; integrating third-party services; gathering customer requirements and turning ambiguity into plans; leaning into AWS infrastructure (EKS/Kubernetes), infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD with GitHub Actions, and observability stacks (Dash0/OpenTelemetry, Sentry, PostHog); contributing to complex networking and multi-region architectures; improving developer experience and platform ergonomics; partnering with Infosec on compliance; building agentic tooling for autonomous diagnostics and alert handling; automating dependency upgrades, runbook execution, and alert pre-diagnosis; and continuously identifying repetitive manual work to convert into agent-driven automation.
The role is open on level from mid-level to senior; trajectory and appetite matter more than years of experience. You'll work in Tessl's new 10,000 sq. ft. office in Kings Cross, London, with a requirement to be in the office at least 3 days per week (anchor days: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday).
REQUIREMENTS:
Must-haves:
- Proven experience as a Software Engineer with TypeScript/Node preferred; you care about code modularity, structure, and aesthetics; equally comfortable contributing to mature codebases with strict CI criteria or hacking quick prototypes
- Genuine pull towards platform and infrastructure work backed by hands-on experience: you've deployed and operated real systems (Kubernetes, cloud environments, infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD); when the chance came to go deeper, you took it (owning platform/DevOps work or picking up infrastructure tasks)
- Solid systems and networking fundamentals: DNS, TLS, VPCs, firewalls; you can reason and debug below the application layer with confidence
- Demonstrated use of AI coding tools and agents to accelerate your own work, and excitement about experimenting with new AI approaches to transform engineering
- Comfortable with fast-paced, high-autonomy environments: you turn loose requirements into plans and shipped work without waiting to be told
Nice-to-haves:
- Self-hosting experience (homelab, personal services, Kubernetes cluster)
- Production AWS/EKS experience or hands-on work with private connectivity, VPNs, or multi-region architectures
- Experience producing infrastructure evidence for ISO 27001 or SOC 2 certifications
- Thrived in an early-stage startup before
