Footprint is an agentic compliance platform that automates financial crime investigations for banks and fintechs. The company's AI system, Percy, learns compliance procedures and executes investigations end-to-end, reducing review workloads by 70%+. The platform is built on four years of identity infrastructure that provides organizational memory across KYC, EDD, sanctions, and monitoring workflows.
In this role, you will be a senior backend engineer reporting directly to the Head of Engineering. You'll own complete product areas spanning API design, service architecture, data modeling, and deployment. Your responsibilities include:
- Designing and building Rust APIs and services that power verification, vaulting, and fraud investigation checks that customers integrate directly into their products
- Owning product areas end-to-end: from ideation through production, working with design and frontend teams
- Building systems that meet strict compliance and security standards for regulated financial institutions
- Shaping the backend architecture for agent-based investigation workflows, an emerging and unsettled problem space
The technical stack is Rust, Python, Postgres, Pulumi, and AWS. You'll work on bounded request/response systems that now need to support agent-shaped workloads with different architectural demands.
Success metrics: Within 90 days, you'll own a product area and ship to customer-facing APIs (agent memory, self-improving agents, or verification capabilities). Within one year, you'll have architected a major platform capability, actively shape product decisions, and raise engineering standards across the team.
The team is small, senior, and ships fast. Footprint is backed by QED, Index, and Box Group, and trusted by FDIC- and OCC-regulated banks plus fintechs including Bilt, Nuvei, and MoonPay. The company 5x'd revenue last year.
REQUIREMENTS (Must-Have):
- 4+ years designing, building, and operating backend systems under real load, including debugging production failures
- Shipped and operated an API that external engineers or teams build against; experience handling compatibility when APIs must change
- Privacy, security, and trust are first-class concerns in your design approach
- Strong ability to reason about tradeoffs and identify failure modes others overlook
- Owned a production service end-to-end, including on-call responsibilities
- Demonstrated ability to accept better designs from colleagues and ship them
REQUIREMENTS (Nice-to-Have):
- Production Rust experience, or deep systems background with genuine interest in learning Rust
- Real-world cryptography or systems security background (relevant given identity data vaulting for regulated institutions)
- Experience designing APIs or SDKs for external developers
- Familiarity with KYC and identity verification workflows
