CesiumAstro develops advanced communication systems for satellites, UAVs, launch vehicles, and other space and airborne platforms. We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer I to join our dynamic, cross-functional team in a hands-on, startup environment.
In this role, you will own mechanical design responsibilities across all phases of product development—from initial concept through requirements definition, detailed design, simulation, analysis, manufacturing, testing, qualification, and in-orbit support. You will develop mechanical designs for Cesium's satellite and spacecraft products, with a focus on electronics packaging, mechanical interfaces, and environmental qualification.
Key responsibilities include:
- Performing thermal management design and thermal simulation/analysis
- Conducting shock and vibration simulation and analysis
- Applying EMI/EMC mitigation techniques
- Executing finite element analysis (FEA) and mechanical simulations
- Developing and optimizing designs using CAD tools
- Applying geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) principles
- Performing cost analysis to validate and optimize designs
- Presenting engineering design review materials to customers and leadership
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams, particularly electrical engineers
You will work on cutting-edge hardware for satellites, spacecraft, and aerospace systems in a collaborative, energetic environment that values autonomous work and continuous learning.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, civil engineering, industrial design, engineering technology, or related technical field
- 0–2 years of related experience in mechanical engineering, structural analysis, stress analysis, CAD, product design, or related engineering discipline
- Understanding of mechanical engineering principles
- Analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency with CAD tools (SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, or AutoCAD)
- Practical understanding of DFM/DFMA implications of material and process selection
- Knowledge of GD&T, drafting standards, and engineering documentation practices
- Experience with engineering analysis tools (ANSYS, MATLAB, or similar)
- Experience with CNC manufacturing
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Familiarity with electronics assemblies and experience working with electrical engineers
- Aerospace industry design, development, qualification, and manufacturing processes
- Experience in electronics packaging, including thermal, vibration, and stress dynamics or spacecraft structures and mechanisms
- Experience with EMI/EMC mitigation techniques
