New Relic is seeking an experienced Manager, Software Engineering to lead the Database Engineering and Cloud Infrastructure team in Bangalore. This role combines technical leadership with people management, overseeing a team of senior engineers responsible for architecting, scaling, and optimizing multi-cloud relational and in-memory database platforms across AWS and Azure.
You will drive the architectural design and operations of enterprise-grade databases, including AWS RDS (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Aurora) and Azure Database services. Key technical responsibilities include designing high-availability architectures with Multi-AZ deployments, auto-failover groups, read replica scaling, and cross-region disaster recovery. You will oversee zero-downtime operations including major-version engine upgrades, schema migrations, and blue/green deployment strategies.
The role encompasses in-memory infrastructure management, including AWS ElastiCache and Azure Cache for Redis at scale. You will spearhead open-source caching initiatives and lead migration pathways from Redis to Valkey using zero-downtime tools like RedisShake, ensuring open-source license compliance and optimizing cloud spend.
You will enforce an Infrastructure as Code (IaC) first culture using Terraform, OpenTofu, Bicep, or CloudFormation to eliminate manual configuration and console drift. You'll drive automated database provisioning, drift detection, and CI/CD pipelines for database schemas using tools like Flyway or Liquibase.
FinOps and cost optimization are critical: you will partner with Finance and DevOps to conduct cost allocation, rightsizing exercises, and reserved instance/savings plan management. You'll evaluate architectural tradeoffs between serverless and provisioned computing models (e.g., Aurora Serverless v2, Azure SQL Serverless) and monitor performance using AWS Performance Insights and Azure Diagnostics.
As a people manager, you will manage, mentor, and grow a team of senior database and cloud infrastructure engineers. You will set operational standards, service level objectives (SLOs), and incident management practices for database availability, security, and scalability.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 12+ years of total software engineering/infrastructure experience, with at least 3–5 years in an engineering management or technical leadership role focused on cloud databases
- Deep hands-on experience operating managed relational databases in both AWS and Azure environments at enterprise scale
- Proven track record managing Redis clusters and navigating Redis-to-Valkey migration strategies
- Mastery of Infrastructure as Code principles (Terraform, OpenTofu, Bicep, or CloudFormation) and database migration tooling (Flyway, Liquibase)
- Demonstrated ability to optimize multi-cloud infrastructure costs, manage serverless vs. provisioned workloads, and deliver measurable cloud cost savings (20–30%+)
- Direct experience implementing automated backups, zero-downtime blue/green deployments, major version upgrades, and multi-region disaster recovery
