Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Manager, Process Engineering - Assembly to lead the engineering effort for the SPARC Tokamak build. You will manage a team of 8-15 process engineers responsible for developing, releasing, and implementing technical work instructions for constructing the SPARC fusion device.
In this role, you will translate department-level strategy into actionable objectives and project timelines, define and optimize process engineering workflows to improve efficiency, and oversee the development of tracking tools to manage hundreds of concurrent planning tasks. You'll establish best practices for mechanical assembly, including standards for alignment, installation, and rework procedures.
Key responsibilities include managing all aspects of team talent (hiring, training, performance management), coaching and mentoring engineers on technical and professional development, and building cross-functional relationships to influence design direction and resolve technical conflicts. You will provide design feedback to SPARC subsystem designs with a focus on manufacturability and assembly, participating in formal and informal design reviews. The role also involves hands-on support during tokamak assembly operations and close collaboration with Field Assembly Engineering and design engineering teams to ensure complex mechanical challenges are resolved and the team remains unblocked.
This is a mission-critical role in a fast-paced environment where you'll work with highly complex assemblies involving high loads, vacuum requirements, and intricate subsystem integration in tightly packaged spaces.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must-have:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering
- 7+ years of Mechanical Engineering experience demonstrating project ownership
- 2+ years directly managing an engineering team or leading a large-scale engineering project as an individual contributor
- 2+ years of CAD software experience
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
- Ability to perform activities such as typing, standing, stooping, climbing, or sitting for extended periods
- Occasional travel required for vendor visits during tool fabrication
- Required onsite 5 days/week when assembly operations are underway; possible first or second shift assignment
- Ability to work in a facility with industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
Bonus qualifications:
- 8+ years of Mechanical Engineering experience
- 4+ years managing an engineering team or leading large-scale projects
- 3+ years with Siemens NX
- Lifting operations experience
- Knowledge of welding, piping, and tubing construction/joining
- Experience with highly complex or delicate assemblies
- Experience with assembly/integration in tightly packaged spaces
- Experience in fast-paced manufacturing, construction, or assembly/integration builds
