Okta is seeking a Manager of Engineering to lead a team of backend Java software engineers building mission-critical identity and security products on the Okta Secure Identity Platform. The Identity Threat Protection (ITP) team uses cutting-edge AI to deliver real-time defense against sophisticated threats by analyzing user behavior and system data to proactively identify and neutralize risks before they impact customers.
In this role, you will manage team goals, contribute to product strategy, and develop your engineers. Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborate cross-functionally across teams with accountability for product delivery, team health, and customer satisfaction
- Define strategic direction and roadmap for the team in both product and technical domains
- Provide technical leadership ensuring scalable, maintainable systems with high quality standards through testing and automation
- Organize and deliver key projects with high business impact through team processes
- Build and grow the team long-term, creating a collaborative environment, recruiting talent, and developing existing engineers
- Drive career management through expectation-setting, feedback, coaching, and removing blockers
The team works on platform features for authentication and authorization within a broader ecosystem of full-stack engineers, data scientists, and ML engineers redefining cloud authentication and next-generation security platforms.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years managing engineering teams, balancing new feature development with maintenance of existing systems
- Experience in stakeholder management including alignment, prioritization, communication, and feedback incorporation
- Demonstrated ability to build teams from the ground up, managing performance, mentoring, and coaching
- Demonstrated focus on delivering outcomes while balancing constraints and tight deadlines
- 7-10 years of prior software development experience with Java or other backend technologies
- Experience and strong opinions on SDLC with testing automation, release orchestration using feature flags and configuration management, and CI/CD platforms
- Demonstrable knowledge of secure web development fundamentals, fault-tolerant systems, and cloud technologies
