Anthropic is seeking a Manager of Applied AI Engineering to lead a team of deeply technical engineers embedded with the company's largest and most strategic accounts (the "Megas" segment). These partner-customers are major revenue drivers and distribution channels for Claude, Anthropic's AI model.
In this role, you will manage a team of Applied AI Engineers working in account-aligned pods alongside Applied AI Architects. Your engineers co-design complex technical solutions with partner engineering organizations, advise on architecture, develop evaluation frameworks, and guide implementation of advanced LLM patterns. You will stay hands-on with the technology while building and coaching your team, setting high bars for engineering judgment and technical standards.
Key responsibilities include:
- Hiring, developing, and scaling a customer-facing technical team with structured feedback and clear competency expectations
- Staffing engineers into account-aligned pods, balancing continuity with flexibility to deploy expertise where needed
- Setting performance goals aligned with each Mega's technical account plan and consumption objectives; establishing metrics and dashboards for team health and impact
- Serving as a senior technical advisor to Mega product and engineering leaders on architecture design, evaluation strategy, and advanced prompting and agentic patterns
- Leading hands-on co-build initiatives from prototypes through production deployments
- Navigating the partner-customer duality, supporting both direct consumption and distribution of Claude through Mega platforms
- Acting as technical escalation point for your team's accounts and partnering with pod leads and sales to sequence work for maximum value
- Building shared assets across pods (reference architectures, agentic patterns, eval frameworks) so learnings compound across all Mega accounts
- Collaborating with Product and Research to surface Mega-driven requirements and advocate for high-impact product changes
- Championing scalable public and internal assets documenting LLM techniques; contributing thought leadership through talks, blog posts, and white papers
- Maintaining current knowledge of LLM capabilities and the AI product development stack
- Traveling to customer sites for workshops, executive sessions, implementation support, and representing Anthropic at conferences
Requirements:
- 6+ years in technical roles such as Forward Deployed Engineer, Software Engineer, Solutions/Sales Engineer, or Technical Product Manager
- 4+ years operating in a formal leadership capacity, ideally with tenure as a manager of managers or managing multiple teams (former technical founders encouraged to apply)
- Demonstrated success hiring, coaching, and scaling customer-facing technical teams in fast-moving or hypergrowth environments
- Experience supporting large, named strategic accounts at a platform, infrastructure, or model company, ideally where the account was both customer and partner
- Production experience with LLMs, including advanced prompt engineering, agent development and frameworks, evaluation frameworks, transcript analysis, MCP, and deployment at scale, with technical depth to set engineering standards and review team work credibly
- Strong programming skills with proficiency in Python or TypeScript and experience building production applications
- Track record engaging senior technical stakeholders (CTOs, CPOs, engineering leaders) and influencing technical architecture and partner product roadmaps
- Experience working in or running mixed pre-sales and hands-on engineering teams (e.g., SA + FDE or SE + delivery)
- Ability to navigate ambiguity and execute across domains with intellectual openness
- High-cooperation mindset for cross-organizational collaboration across Sales, Partnerships, Product, and Research
- Exceptional communication skills to convey technical concepts to diverse stakeholders
- Passion for advancing safe, beneficial AI systems
Strong candidates may also have:
- Background at a hyperscaler, foundation model lab, or large ISV in strategic-accounts or alliances technical role
- Experience with marketplace, embed/OEM, or co-sell motions
- Prior forward-deployed engineering leadership
- Experience leading technical teams through rapid scale
- Experience coaching engineers from purely technical roles into customer-facing, advisory work
- Executive briefing and public speaking presence
