HUD is building infrastructure for RL training data and evals for frontier AI agents, plus a marketplace to sell these to frontier labs. The company has raised $16M from top VCs, was part of YC W25, and is used by frontier labs, Fortune 500 companies, and startups.
You will build and own the end-to-end legal operating system at HUD, combining strong legal judgment with an operator's instinct for systems, tooling, and leverage. This is not a traditional in-house counsel role—you'll handle contracts directly one day and redesign processes for minimal manual intervention the next.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own the complete legal operating system: intake, prioritization, contracting workflows, approvals, escalation paths, document management, and outside-counsel coordination
- Draft, review, and negotiate routine commercial agreements (MSAs, SOWs, data licenses, SLAs, NDAs, vendor agreements) across buyers, data vendors, and partners
- Build and continuously improve templates and negotiation playbooks to handle recurring issues like data rights and usage restrictions quickly and consistently
- Identify opportunities to automate or streamline high-volume legal workflows using software and AI while preserving human review for judgment-heavy issues
- Establish clear rules for internal handling, standardization/automation, and escalation to founders or outside counsel
- Manage outside counsel strategically: scoping work, preparing issues efficiently, controlling legal spend, and ensuring external lawyers focus on high-value or specialist questions
The company is ~25 people, mostly full-time in-person with some remote flexibility. The team includes 4 International Olympiad medalists, serial AI startup founders, and researchers with publications at ICLR and NeurIPS. HUD has 8 figures in funding and high revenue growth, scaling profitably to meet strong demand.
Full-time, on-site in San Francisco Bay Area or Singapore. Visa sponsorship available. Competitive compensation, 100% covered top-tier medical/dental/vision, lunch and dinner in office, company-wide holiday break, Equinox membership, 401k, commuter benefits, and unlimited access to ChatGPT, Claude Code, and Cursor tokens.
REQUIREMENTS:
You should have:
- Experience in legal operations, contracts management, commercial operations, transactional legal work, business operations, or a combination at a fast-growing technology company
- Strong experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial technology agreements, with judgment to distinguish routine issues from matters requiring specialist legal advice
- Comfort working with legal technology, workflow tools, and AI, with interest in using them to make legal work materially faster and more scalable
- Strong commercial judgment and ability to balance legal risk against speed, customer needs, and business priorities
- Excellent written communication, attention to detail, and confidence to push back constructively on sophisticated customers, vendors, and internal stakeholders
Strong candidates may also have:
- Legal training (law firm or in-house legal experience), but preferring operating and building systems over traditional counsel practice
- Experience building or scaling legal operations, contract management, or deal desk from early stage
- Experience with data licensing, IP-intensive transactions, marketplaces, or businesses where contractual rights tie closely to product
- Experience managing outside counsel
- Early-stage startup experience with ability to work independently in fast-paced environments
The company prioritizes technical aptitude and learning potential over years of experience and encourages motivated candidates to apply even if they don't meet all criteria.
