Salary: CAD 186,000 - 236,000 / annual
Xero is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join their Vancouver office on a hybrid basis. This is a senior individual contributor role focused on solving engineering problems at scale, moving beyond feature delivery to influence the architecture and implementation of distributed systems.
You will have autonomy to make major code design decisions and contribute to global engineering standards. The role balances technical excellence with mentorship—you'll act as a role model and coach others through complex technical challenges to help them grow.
Initially, you will focus on:
- Modernizing systems by refactoring monolithic components into distributed, scalable architectures
- Enhancing developer experience through maturation of CI/CD concepts, tooling, and TDD practices
- Building and maintaining a diverse tech stack including C#, .NET, React, AWS, and Kubernetes
- Developing and implementing technical solution designs aligned with long-term engineering frameworks
You will join a collaborative environment where engineers, product owners, and designers work together using agile delivery practices. The team prioritizes continuous learning and mastery, with frequent code reviews and knowledge-sharing sessions to maintain high technical standards.
The role is open to candidates from Seattle, San Mateo, Vancouver, and Toronto.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Proven experience delivering and operating complex, large-scale systems in distributed/high-availability environments, with strong fundamentals and ability to ramp quickly across adjacent technologies (tech-stack agnostic)
- Growth mindset and passion for proactively maintaining and sharing technical knowledge with peers
- Background designing and building high-quality software within a range of languages and tools
- Ability to lead major code design decisions and contribute to wider technical solutioning
- Experience with modern engineering practices: automated testing, refactoring, agile delivery
- Demonstrated ability and enjoyment mentoring other engineers and helping them grow technical skills through supportive coaching
- Deep care for technical excellence and drive to solve large-scale engineering challenges
