Bitwarden is a trusted identity security leader serving millions of users worldwide with password management, secrets management, and passwordless innovations. The company is headquartered in Santa Barbara, California with distributed teams globally.
As a Lead Software Engineer on the Provider/Business Unit Portals team, you will lead the design and development of two complementary portal systems. The Provider Portal serves managed service providers (MSPs) and resellers who administer Bitwarden organizations on behalf of external customers. The Business Unit Portal is built for a single company's administrators to manage multiple Enterprise organizations belonging to that company (e.g., different business units, subsidiaries, or departments). Both portals provide a centralized experience for creating and managing multiple Bitwarden Enterprise organizations at scale.
This is a hands-on role with no people management expectations. You will stay close to the code while driving architecture, technical direction, and solving complex, high-impact engineering problems. As the India Product Engineering organization grows, you will help shape engineering practices and mentor other engineers through technical leadership.
Key responsibilities include:
- End-to-end ownership of secure, performant services and applications for both portals, including design, build, test, deploy, and operations
- Setting engineering standards through pull request review, establishing conventions for testing, error handling, API design, and secure coding
- Maintaining strong automated test suites, integration harnesses, and CI/CD pipelines so manual testing is never the safety net
- Owning architecture specifications, API contracts, and open source developer documentation
- Maintaining clean service boundaries and designing resilient APIs so the portals can evolve independently of the core platform
- Recording technical decision reasoning and owning technical direction
- Growing engineers around you through pairing on hard problems, substantive design feedback, and mentorship
- Contributing to performance, reliability, accessibility, and maintainability of the codebase
- Identifying technical debt, articulating its cost, and sequencing pragmatic refactoring alongside delivery
- Owning operational health, performance, and reliability telemetry of services in production
- Partnering closely with Product, Design, Security, and other engineering teams to design and validate solutions
Requirements:
- 8+ years as a Lead Software Engineer with team lead experience paired with AI-assisted development practices
- Experience leading a team's technical direction, mentoring senior engineers, and being accountable for outcomes you did not implement yourself
- Expertise in C# / .NET and TypeScript / Angular with willingness to build depth in other languages/frameworks
- Experience shaping how teams adopt AI-assisted development (what gets automated, what stays human-reviewed, quality and provenance standards)
- Relational database design, optimization, and SQL Server experience
- Rust experience (core SDK utilizes this language with WASM and UNIFFI bindings)
- Experience writing, consuming, and using SDKs / APIs
- Preferably experience with AI-assisted development, particularly Claude Code
- Familiarity with MVC design pattern for interaction with Admin Portal
- Familiarity with Entity Framework or adjacent ORM implementations (Postgres, MySQL, SQLite)
- Track record of running incremental modernization inside live codebases (framework upgrades, strict-typing rollouts, state-management migrations) without halting feature delivery
- Practical experience with containerized environments (Docker/Kubernetes)
- Practical experience with automated test frameworks (unit, integration, end-to-end)
- Practical experience with SRE/observability tools (APM, alerting, telemetry dashboards)
- Familiarity with zero-trust and zero-knowledge security architectures, encryption standards, and threat-modeling methodologies
- Highly collaborative and adaptable mindset, excited about rapid, outcome-driven feedback loops
- Enthusiasm for open source, developer advocacy, and building a more secure internet
- Excellent problem-solving skills, valuing written documentation and data-driven technical decisions
