Beacon Software is a portfolio operator acquiring and scaling vertical SaaS companies using an agentic operating system to automate portfolio operations, value creation, and deal sourcing. The company has raised $550M+ from top-tier investors including General Catalyst, Lightspeed, and D1 Capital. As a Lead Software Engineer, you will be embedded full-time within one of Beacon's portfolio companies—a profitable, established business with an existing customer base. Your mission is to bring Beacon's engineering model and modernization practices to that company, serving as its primary technical leader. Key responsibilities include: - Writing production code daily while establishing best practices across the engineering organization - Modernizing the software development lifecycle by implementing CI/CD pipelines, comprehensive testing, staging environments, feature flags, and automated deployment systems - Coaching and developing the existing engineering team, many of whom have been heads-down for years, to improve code quality and engineering practices - Partnering with the General Manager to set the technical roadmap and own architectural trade-offs - Integrating AI and coding agents into the development workflow to dramatically accelerate delivery—work that previously took weeks should take days - Embedding AI capabilities directly into the product (retrieval, tool use, evaluations, guardrails) in production environments The technical stack varies by portfolio company and may include .NET, Rails, Python, TypeScript, Oracle, PHP, and others. You should be comfortable working across multiple stacks or learning new ones quickly. This is a hands-on role where you ship code every day while simultaneously leading technical strategy and team development. Some engineers stay with one company for years; others move to a new portfolio company when the time is right. REQUIREMENTS: - 7+ years of software engineering experience, including time as a tech lead, founding engineer, CTO of a small company, or the sole engineer holding a product together - Shipped production code in at least three different technology stacks and can pick up new ones quickly - Proven ability to take over a messy codebase and a discouraged team, with concrete examples of what you did first - Daily user of coding agents; can demonstrate your setup and workflow - Strong judgment and ability to work independently without daily oversight - Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with GMs, operators, and customers BONUS: - Experience as the first engineering leader at a company that previously had none - Vertical or B2B SaaS background, especially in markets where buyer and user are different - Track record of modernizing legacy codebases without a full rewrite
