Beacon Software acquires and operates a portfolio of vertical SaaS companies, using an agentic operating system to scale operations and value creation. As a Lead Software Engineer, you will be embedded full-time within one of Beacon's portfolio companies—a profitable, established business with customers relying on its product.
You will be the engineering leader responsible for modernizing the company's engineering practices while shipping production code daily. Your responsibilities include:
- Writing and shipping code from day one; you pick up the company's existing stack (which may include .NET, Rails, Python, TypeScript, Oracle, PHP, or others) and contribute to the codebase immediately.
- Modernizing the software development lifecycle by implementing CI/CD pipelines, comprehensive testing, staging environments, feature flags, automated deployments, and integrating coding agents into the workflow—all while maintaining shipping velocity.
- Coaching and developing the existing engineering team, many of whom have been heads-down for years, to improve code quality and engineering practices.
- Setting the technical roadmap in partnership with the General Manager, making trade-off decisions about what gets built and how.
- Transforming how work gets done by leveraging AI coding agents to compress timelines—work that previously took weeks should take days.
- Integrating AI capabilities into the product itself, including retrieval-augmented generation, tool use, evaluations, and guardrails in production systems.
You will have autonomy and good judgment is expected; nobody will be checking your work daily. You'll work directly with GMs, operators, and customers.
Beacon has raised $550M+ from top-tier investors including General Catalyst, Lightspeed, D1 Capital, and family offices of Stripe, DoorDash, and Ramp founders.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, including time as a tech lead, founding engineer, CTO of a small company, or the sole engineer holding a product together.
- Comfortable working across multiple technology stacks; must have shipped production code in at least three different stacks and pick up new ones quickly.
- Proven ability to take over a messy codebase and a discouraged team, with concrete examples of what you did first to turn things around.
- AI-native: you use coding agents daily and can demonstrate your setup and workflow.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ease working with non-technical stakeholders (GMs, operators, customers).
- Sound independent judgment and ability to operate with minimal oversight.
BONUS:
- Experience as the first engineering leader at a company that previously had none.
- Vertical or B2B SaaS background, especially in markets where buyer and user are different.
- Track record of modernizing legacy codebases without a full rewrite.
