Beacon Software is seeking an Engineering Leader to lead the technical strategy and team at System Dynamics (SDC), a mature ERP platform serving distribution and manufacturing businesses. SDC powers order entry, warehouse management, financials, manufacturing, job costing, HR, CRM, and mobile van sales across 36 modules, built on Oracle and hosted on OCI.
You will be the key technical decision-maker for architecture, infrastructure, and releases. This is a player-coach role: you remain hands-on in code and infrastructure while elevating the engineering team's capabilities, coaching individuals to higher performance, and hiring to fill gaps. The product is mature but the engineering practice is not—your mandate is to modernize development workflows, introduce version control discipline, automated testing, CI/CD, and modern practices to a team that has shipped without them.
Key responsibilities include:
- Making final technical decisions on architecture, infrastructure, and release strategy; explaining tradeoffs to leadership and holding the line
- Leading and upgrading the engineering team through coaching, performance management, and strategic hiring
- Owning the production platform: OCI compute and databases, 60–80 site-to-site VPNs, OS and database patching, backups, and disaster recovery
- Owning the release pipeline end-to-end, from ticket to staged release to customer deployment
- Reducing operational risk by replacing aging infrastructure, decommissioning a colo, hardening DR, and embedding operational knowledge in documentation and team members
- Migrating codebase to Git: schema and PL/SQL as code, database migrations, APEX app versioning
- Raising engineering standards: isolated dev environments, automated tests (utPLSQL or equivalent), CI gates, and code review as habit
- Leveraging AI coding agents on your own work and introducing them to the team for schema work, PL/SQL, ticket history analysis, and Forms-to-APEX migration
- Leading modernization away from Oracle Forms and Reports 12c (deprecated) toward APEX; managing 1,000+ existing APEX apps
- Executing customer migrations from on-prem and colo to OCI, starting hands-on and then scaling via runbooks
- Owning uptime and reliability for an ERP that customers depend on daily; building alerting and on-call rotations
- Communicating directly with non-engineers: the GM, customer IT staff, DBAs, and support teams
Beacon buys established vertical software companies and embeds strong engineering leadership. You will own SDC's technology and be responsible for transforming its engineering culture and practices.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Proven track record leading a small engineering team while shipping code yourself
- Experience raising a team's bar: coaching people up, making hard personnel decisions, and hiring effectively
- Comfort making final technical decisions with incomplete information, explaining them clearly, and adjusting based on evidence
- Senior generalist across databases, Linux, networking, deployment, and application code; ability to pick up unfamiliar stacks quickly
- Production infrastructure ownership experience: running databases, Linux fleets, backups, and DR for mission-critical systems; on-call experience
- Demonstrated ability to walk into a codebase with years of technical debt and improve it while continuing to ship
- Track record of introducing Git, CI, automated tests, and code review to teams that shipped without them
- Daily use of AI coding agents with informed opinions on their strengths and limitations (prototypes do not count)
- Hands-on capability across the full stack: writing PL/SQL, editing deployment scripts, debugging infrastructure at any hour
- Strong written communication for documenting decisions, runbooks, and standards
NICE TO HAVE:
- Oracle experience (DBA, OCI, APEX, PL/SQL, Forms and Reports)
- ERP or long-lived line-of-business software background
- Familiarity with SQLcl, Liquibase, utPLSQL, or ORDS
