Salary: USD 165,000 - 280,000 / annual

General Matter is building the world's lowest-cost uranium enrichment services in the US to power advanced reactors, AI, and critical manufacturing. The mission is to make nuclear the cleanest, safest, and most affordable source of baseload power. As Lead Embedded Software Engineer, you will serve as a technical leader for embedded software that directly controls General Matter's industrial systems. You will manage and mentor a small team of engineers while remaining deeply hands-on in development. Your responsibilities include architecting safety-critical embedded software, managing and developing direct reports, building low-level firmware in C/C++ and Rust to control electromechanical actuators and process high-speed sensor data, designing robust control architectures and state machines, owning software from development through deployment by creating automated build and test infrastructure, partnering with hardware and electrical engineers on system integration, performing safety analyses and validating control logic for deterministic behavior under normal and fault conditions, debugging real-world embedded systems using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers, and contributing to integrated system testing and commissioning of production equipment. You will set technical direction, establish engineering standards and best practices, and lead the design and development of complex embedded software across the system. You will provide day-to-day technical mentorship and support to direct reports and work closely with electrical engineers, software engineers, chemical engineers, manufacturing engineers, nuclear engineers, materials scientists, and physicists to translate system requirements into robust, production-ready software. **Requirements:** - 7+ years of experience in a technical leadership position defining architecture, system design, and functional requirements - 1+ year experience managing a team - Demonstrated experience defining system architecture and translating functional requirements into technical solutions - Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply them to complex, multidisciplinary systems - Ability to perform trade studies and make clear recommendations using first principles and engineering fundamentals, even with incomplete information - Development experience in C, C++, Golang, Python, or Rust - Experience with embedded or low-level systems development - BS degree in computer science, engineering, math, or another STEM discipline **Preferred Skills:** - Hands-on experience with control systems, actuators, or software directly interfacing with physical systems - Data acquisition system setup, maintenance, and development - Electrical hardware troubleshooting and PCBA bring-up assistance - Digital Signal Processing - Low-level communication protocol debugging - Experience mentoring engineers or providing technical leadership across a team - Experience taking complex systems from architecture through integration, validation, and deployment - Experience in fast-paced engineering environments requiring resourceful, entrepreneurial approaches - Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary
