Salary: USD 165,000 - 185,000 / annual
BETA Technologies is revolutionizing electric aviation, and this role leads the embedded software development effort for airborne systems. As Lead Embedded Software Engineer, you will manage a team of up to 20 software engineers and testers while directly contributing to the specification, architecture, design, implementation, integration, testing, and analysis of safety-critical embedded software for BETA's aircraft.
Key responsibilities include:
- Analyzing system architecture, hardware specifications, and safety requirements to lead embedded software design, integration, and testing
- Coordinating with systems engineering, safety engineering, quality assurance, and airworthiness teams to achieve certification
- Working with project engineers to understand business drivers, identify feature delivery timelines, staffing needs, and support hardware/software integration and aircraft-level testing
- Establishing work assignments, feature sets, and deadlines to execute projects efficiently while meeting business goals
- Preparing and presenting project status reports to BETA leadership and certifying authorities, highlighting team velocity, dependencies, constraints, and certification considerations
- Creating and maintaining certification documentation including software plans, standards, and lifecycle data; participating in certification audits and reviews
- Contributing hands-on to development and testing, including requirements management, architecture and design, and test development
- Mentoring junior engineers on DO-178C objectives, real-time and safety-critical embedded software best practices, and integration/troubleshooting techniques
This is a hands-on leadership role where you lead by example while managing a significant team in a highly regulated aerospace environment.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field from an accredited university
- Minimum 10 years of experience in real-time embedded software development for safety-critical systems
- Expert-level knowledge and experience with DO-178C Level A compliance activities and outputs
- Strong experience and expertise in the full software lifecycle for aerospace embedded software
- Excellent team communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to effectively organize and lead a team of up to 20 software engineers
- Experience with Stage of Involvement reviews and communication with FAA personnel and DERs
- Experience with RTCA DO-330 tool qualification objectives, activities, and outputs
- Experience with RTCA DO-331 model-based development objectives, activities, and outputs
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Deep technical knowledge of safety-critical embedded software best practices, communication devices/protocols, and multi-core processors
- Advanced software engineering techniques (model-based software engineering, software product line engineering, formal methods)
- Experience with embedded software for electric motor control, battery management systems, or flight control systems
- Project management experience (estimating, tracking, reporting; traditional, kanban, or scrum methodologies)
