Mach Industries, founded in 2023, is a rapidly growing defense technology company with ~350 employees developing next-generation autonomous defense platforms. The company operates with startup agility while focusing on scalable, decentralized defense systems for the U.S. and allies.
You will serve as the Lead Environmental Health & Safety Engineer, providing technical leadership and hands-on execution of comprehensive EHS programs across engineering, manufacturing, prototyping, testing, and operational environments. This is a senior technical role partnering directly with Engineering, Manufacturing, Operations, Facilities, and site leadership.
Key responsibilities include:
**EHS Technical Leadership & Risk Management**: Serve as subject matter expert for environmental, health, and safety matters. Identify, assess, and mitigate occupational and environmental hazards. Lead Job Hazard Analyses, risk assessments, and task-specific evaluations. Apply hierarchy of controls to eliminate or reduce hazards, prioritizing engineering solutions. Partner with engineering teams during equipment and process design to integrate safety early. Review new/modified equipment, processes, and materials prior to implementation. Support operational readiness and pre-startup safety reviews.
**High-Hazard & Manufacturing Safety**: Provide technical EHS support for manufacturing activities including electrical systems, machinery, hazardous energy, chemicals, pressure systems, hot work, material handling, lasers, and robotics. Develop and maintain machine safety, guarding, lockout/tagout, electrical safety, confined space, and fall protection programs. Support process safety evaluations for hazardous materials, energetic materials, flammables, and compressed gases. Participate in Process Hazard Analyses and FMEAs. Ensure safety controls remain effective as prototypes transition to higher-rate production.
**Industrial Hygiene & Occupational Health**: Identify and evaluate employee exposure to chemical, physical, and environmental hazards. Develop industrial hygiene assessments and exposure-monitoring strategies for noise, airborne contaminants, welding fumes, and particulates. Coordinate third-party monitoring and interpret results. Develop respiratory protection, hearing conservation, PPE, and ergonomics programs. Maintain exposure records per regulatory requirements.
**Environmental Compliance & Management**: Lead environmental compliance programs ensuring adherence to federal, state, and local regulations. Manage hazardous materials and waste programs including identification, classification, labeling, storage, handling, transportation, and disposal per EPA, DTSC, RCRA, and California regulations. Oversee environmental permitting, compliance monitoring, and reporting for air emissions, wastewater, stormwater, and hazardous materials storage. Develop and maintain Hazardous Materials Business Plans, chemical inventories, and Safety Data Sheets. Coordinate with regulatory agencies including CUPAs, DTSC, Regional Water Quality Control Boards, and Air Quality Management Districts. Support environmental assessments for new processes and facility modifications. Establish hazardous waste accumulation areas and inspection protocols. Develop spill prevention and emergency response procedures including SPCC plans. Conduct routine environmental compliance inspections and audits.
**Regulatory Compliance**: Maintain working knowledge of OSHA, Cal/OSHA, EPA, and other relevant regulations. Ensure EHS programs align with regulatory standards. Maintain required documentation, permits, and compliance reports. Serve as technical resource during regulatory inspections and audits. Monitor regulatory changes and implement necessary compliance measures.
**Incident Investigation & Corrective Action**: Lead or support investigations of injuries, illnesses, near misses, spills, and other EHS events. Apply structured root-cause analysis methodologies. Develop corrective and preventive actions addressing root causes. Track actions through closure and verify effectiveness. Communicate lessons learned across operations. Support incident notifications and regulatory reporting.
**Inspections, Audits & Continuous Improvement**: Conduct routine EHS inspections and operational audits. Identify unsafe conditions and work with teams on corrective actions. Develop risk-based inspection programs. Support internal assessments and external audits. Analyze leading and lagging EHS indicators. Develop practical metrics for hazards, near misses, incidents, and performance indicators.
**Contractor & Vendor Safety**: Support contractor safety requirements for construction, maintenance, and equipment installation. Review contractor work plans for appropriate EHS controls. Participate in contractor onboarding and pre-job planning. Identify deficiencies and coordinate corrective actions.
**Training & Safety Culture**: Develop and deliver EHS training for employees, contractors, supervisors, and engineers. Translate regulatory requirements into practical expectations. Coach on hazard recognition and incident prevention. Promote proactive reporting. Build relationships with Engineering and Operations to position EHS as an enabling technical partner.
You will spend significant time in manufacturing, laboratory, prototype, and test areas. The ideal candidate is comfortable in rapidly evolving environments where new equipment, processes, materials, and hazards are regularly introduced. You will combine strong regulatory knowledge with an engineering mindset, focusing on eliminating hazards through design and practical risk controls.
**Requirements**:
- Must be a U.S. citizen, national, lawful permanent resident, Refugee, or Asylee, or be eligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State (ITAR compliance required)
- Participation in E-Verify required
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local EHS regulations (OSHA, Cal/OSHA, EPA)
- Experience with industrial hygiene, occupational health, and environmental compliance
- Experience with manufacturing safety, high-hazard operations, and process safety
- Ability to conduct hazard assessments, risk analyses, and incident investigations
- Strong technical and communication skills to translate regulatory requirements into operational practice
- Ability to work in dynamic, rapidly evolving manufacturing environments
