Novo is a Series B fintech startup on a mission to build the go-to banking platform for small businesses in the US. We're modernizing business banking by providing entrepreneurs, freelancers, and SMBs with an operating system that makes banking as simple as iOS—featuring modern bank accounts, payment tracking, international transfers, and integrated financial tools.
As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you will drive technical direction and own Novo's cloud infrastructure strategy. You'll collaborate with engineering managers, product, and security teams to design, build, and maintain scalable AWS infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/Terragrunt). Your responsibilities span three core areas:
**Build & Automate:** Design and own Novo's AWS cloud infrastructure, automating scaling, patching, incident response, and day-2 operations. Implement and evolve CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions) for speed and safety. Deploy self-service tooling to eliminate bottlenecks and enable all engineering teams to move faster. Partner with developers to build services aligned with modern design patterns (12-Factor, GitOps).
**Secure & Observe:** Develop and enforce security policies across all environments (dev, QA, staging, prod). Implement Zero-Trust networking and automated TLS certificate lifecycle management. Monitor and troubleshoot services using Prometheus/Grafana, ELK, and CloudWatch. Design and maintain Nginx configurations, load balancing, and reverse proxy patterns.
**Collaborate & Influence:** Drive technical direction through design and code reviews. Contribute to DevOps hiring, technical assessments, and interview panels. Build trust-based relationships across teams.
**AI & Modern Tooling:** Actively use AI-assisted tools (Google Gemini, LLM-based runbook generation, intelligent alerting) to accelerate infrastructure delivery. Evaluate and adopt emerging AIOps tooling. Build internal AI-augmented automations: auto-remediation scripts, policy-as-code evaluators, and intelligent capacity recommendations. Champion a culture of "automate before you delegate."
**Requirements:**
- 8+ years in cloud infrastructure with 3+ years hands-on AWS, owning complex systems end-to-end and driving technical decisions across engineering teams
- Deep expertise in AWS services: EC2, EKS, ECS, RDS, Elasticache, S3, IAM, VPC, Route 53, CloudFront
- Expert-level Terraform (Terragrunt a strong plus); able to define custom internal modules
- Confident managing multi-account AWS environments
- Strong Linux systems knowledge: kernel, networking, performance tuning, package management
- Container expertise: Docker, Kubernetes, Helm chart authoring
- Kubernetes topology expertise: Taints/tolerations, Affinities, Topology Spreads
- Strong scripting in Bash and at least one general-purpose language (Python preferred)
- CI/CD platform experience: Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or CircleCI
- Git mastery: branching strategies, code review workflows, GitOps
- Hands-on experience with Prometheus/Grafana, ELK, CloudWatch
- Nginx configuration, SSL/TLS management, certificate lifecycle automation
- VPN implementation: OpenVPN
- Zero Trust implementation: Cloudflare Tunnels
- Cloud security best practices: IAM least-privilege, secrets management (Vault/AWS Secrets Manager), network segmentation
- Containers and Kubernetes security: Network Policies, RBAC, auditing, hardening, Seccomp
- Experience supporting relational databases (PostgreSQL), caches (Redis, Memcache), message buses (Kafka/RedPanda, RabbitMQ), NoSQL (MongoDB, DynamoDB)
- Working knowledge of networking fundamentals: DNS, TCP/IP, load balancing, CDN
- Active daily use of AI coding assistants (Copilot, Cursor, Claude, ChatGPT)
- Applied LLMs or AI tooling to infrastructure problems: incident summarization, code generation, IaC linting, runbook drafting
- Understanding of AI-generated infrastructure code limitations and critical review practices
- Curiosity about AIOps, LLMOps, and platform engineering trends
