Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is a Connected Operations Cloud platform enabling organizations in physical operations—agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, manufacturing—to harness IoT data for actionable insights. The company helps improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability across industries representing over 40% of global GDP. As a Lead Design Engineer, you will build the systems that power Samsara's product and scale its design team's impact. You'll define components, patterns, tokens, and guidelines for both people and AI agents to build with. Working in both design and code, you'll ship highly interactive UI across web and mobile platforms. Your responsibilities include codifying design principles and heuristics for high-quality AI generation, shaping how quickly teams can build, how reliably products behave, and how confidently customers use them. Key responsibilities: - Develop core system components, evals, and feedback loops to harden AI design and code generation - Govern design quality through structure, preventing poor AI outputs from reaching customers - Ensure system decisions translate cleanly into code with shared ownership of quality, performance, and maintainability - Build accessibility, responsiveness, and performance into the system by default - Set clear contribution, governance, and deprecation models balancing speed with system integrity - Meet regularly with designers and engineers using the system, incorporating their feedback and usage data - Share AI tools, workflows, and tactics with wider design and engineering teams - Champion and embed Samsara's cultural principles as the company scales globally This is a remote role open to US-based candidates. Samsara offers a flexible, employee-led remote model with professional development stipends, comprehensive health and parental leave plans, and equity participation in a high-growth public company. Requirements: - 8+ years of experience in design engineering, design systems, product design, or front-end engineering, building UX/UI for web and mobile applications - Shipped design system or component library work with portfolio, case studies, or code samples demonstrating what you built, your decision-making process, and how teams adopted it (portfolio required) - Strong interaction and visual design skills with judgment to know when to use established patterns versus inventing new ones - Experience with design tokens, theming, and accessibility standards - Regular use of AI tools in practice (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code, Figma Make) with shipped work attributable to them and experience connecting them to design systems; ability to explain, review, and debug generated code - Experience partnering with designers, engineers, and product managers on short cycles
