Salary: EUR 74,200 - 90,000 / annual
MariaDB is seeking an experienced Java Senior Software Engineer to lead development of a highly scalable, geo-distributed, and performant database solution. You will work on a small, highly skilled team where your contributions directly impact a system used by 75% of the Fortune 500 and billions of people worldwide.
In this role, you will ensure the scalability, performance, and reliability of the database system by collaborating with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new features. You'll troubleshoot and resolve complex issues in distributed environments, profile and debug performance using tools like JFR, JMC, async-profiler, and VisualVM. Your responsibilities include developing and optimizing data structures for high data-intensive scenarios, implementing efficient ways to store data to disk and transmit data across network nodes with failure handling and recovery, and implementing algorithms for high availability across the cluster. You will also investigate flaws in data consistency algorithms, which may require thorough debugging on multi-node clusters and low-level byte-represented data.
The role emphasizes deep technical work on replication, sharding, concurrency, and performance optimization. You'll maintain clean, reviewable code with Git and collaborate globally while contributing to open-source initiatives.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 4+ years of experience in Java programming
- Deep knowledge of concurrency in Java, Java Memory Model, and/or concurrency models in other programming systems
- Excellent Java SE knowledge including IO and JVM internals
- Experience with SQL databases
- Experience troubleshooting Java applications and/or databases
- Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and debugging skills
- Experience working effectively in fast-paced, collaborative environments
- Deep SQL knowledge (MariaDB/MySQL/PostgreSQL/Apache Ignite/GridGain) and passion for distributed systems (Raft, MVCC, ACID)
- Understanding of MVCC and P2PL, and the difference between Snapshot Isolation and REPEATABLE READ
STRONG PLUS:
- Experience with NoSQL and/or distributed databases
- Experience building highload distributed systems and algorithms
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and/or public cloud (AWS, GCE, Azure)
- Open-source contributions, automation expertise, or performance/load testing
- Active use of AI
