Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history, delivering empirical data via a cloud-based platform to commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. The Infrastructure Solutions Engineer role sits within a small, multi-disciplinary team that makes Planet's infrastructure easier to use and more accessible to internal engineering teams. You will serve as a primary point of contact for cross-engineering infrastructure requests, resolving immediate blockers and triaging complex issues to core platform owners. Your day-to-day work involves reading other teams' stacks, executing complex workload and storage migrations across cloud environments, and creating proof-of-concepts and repeatable migration playbooks. You'll drive scoped technical deliverables within team engagements, collaborating with capability owners and internal partners to complete infrastructure objectives. Key responsibilities include developing infrastructure tooling such as Terraform modules, Helm charts, CLIs, and client libraries in Go and Python to enable standardized platform adoption. You'll create technical documentation, runbooks, and worked examples to reduce recurring engineering support queries, and instrument observability dashboards and reporting tools to provide engineering teams visibility into infrastructure cost, capacity, and usage. This is a full-time, remote position based in the United States. If located near a Planet office (San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, or The Netherlands), you are expected to work from that office 3 days per week. The role is driven by unreasonable hospitality—delivering value out of proportion to what was asked—and built on solid engineering and operational fundamentals. A senior engineer works alongside you on ambiguous problems, so you are not expected to walk into complex issues alone. You will spend significant time in other teams' repositories, channels, and problems. **Requirements:** - 4+ years of experience in Platform Engineering, DevOps, System Administration, Site Reliability Engineering, or a related infrastructure discipline - Bachelor's degree in a relevant field - Experience deploying, managing, and troubleshooting workloads on Kubernetes in production environments - Experience operating within public cloud platforms, preferably Google Cloud Platform (GCP) - Experience using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Crossplane) and GitOps tooling (Helm, ArgoCD) alongside CI/CD pipelines (GitLab) - Proficiency in software development using Go or Python for automation and tooling - Ability to drive cross-functional projects to completion and communicate technical updates across team boundaries **Preferred qualifications:** - Experience in a developer enablement, platform support, or internal tooling role serving software engineers - Experience with large-scale block storage technologies (e.g., GCP Persistent Disk, Hyperdisk, Ceph) - Familiarity with workflow orchestration frameworks (e.g., Temporal) or large-scale batch data processing pipelines - Exposure to enterprise observability stack configuration and telemetry practices
