You will be Head of Quality Engineering, accountable for engineering quality across the entire organization while enabling teams to own quality locally. This is a hands-on role with managerial responsibility. You will lead a small team of ~2 Quality Engineers (new hires) and embed them across engineering teams to improve quality practices.
Key responsibilities:
**Quality Ownership & Metrics**
- Monitor and report on Service Level Objective (SLO) performance; engage teams to mature SLO definitions
- Introduce systematic performance testing into the software development lifecycle
- Own follow-ups and resolutions from the incident process across engineering
- Identify hotspots, catalogue risks, and recommend remediations
- Reduce incident rate per PR and increase SLO coverage across services
**Team Leadership**
- Hire and manage a team of Quality Engineers
- Deploy Quality Engineers into engineering teams to help improve their quality practices
- Support individuals embedded across the organization
**Quality Culture & Strategy**
- Evangelize quality across the organization
- Work with senior stakeholders to identify and solve quality challenges
- Embed quality thinking into all phases of the SDLC, not just testing
- Shift-left testing practices and form a guild of Quality representatives
- Scope and champion quality initiatives on team roadmaps
**AI & Innovation**
- Lead the introduction of AI-assisted quality tooling (AI testing agents, test failure triage agents, production observers)
- Innovate with LLMs to improve efficiency and accuracy of testing
- Evaluate, implement, and measure impact of AI tools on team workflows
**Hands-On Technical Work**
- Engage with teams on testing solutions
- Contribute code to test frameworks and CI pipelines
- Shape CI/CD pipelines for test reliability (flakiness reduction, parallelization, artifact management)
You will work with diverse tech stacks: PHP, Kotlin, Go, Python (backend); TypeScript, React, React Native, GraphQL (frontend); PHPUnit, Behat, JUnit, Jest, Maestro, K6 (testing); Datadog, Sentry, Grafana (observability); AWS, Docker, Kubernetes (infrastructure).
In your first 12 months, success looks like: reduction in incident rate per PR, meaningful increase in SLO coverage, introduction of effective AI-assisted quality tooling, and effective risk-based quality reporting.
**Requirements**
Essential:
- At least 7 years in quality-related roles
- Proven experience running QA initiatives across an organization to improve quality output across engineering teams
- Demonstrated senior stakeholder management skills
- Hands-on experience testing across the stack (backends, frontends, functional, unit, performance, accessibility testing)
- Line management experience with a small team
- Experience with B2C products at scale (millions of users)
- Experience shaping CI/CD pipelines for test reliability (GitHub Actions or similar), including flakiness reduction, parallelization, artifact management, and runtime control
- Shipped AI tooling into a quality process (from evaluating/buying off-the-shelf tools to building bespoke agents); can describe the impact
- Proactive, low-ego, clear communicator; able to chase things down when blocked
Nice to Have:
- Experience with Datadog, Sentry, or similar monitoring tools
- Experience with incident.io or similar incident management platforms
- SLO management and using SLOs to improve quality
- Financial services or regulated B2C environment experience
- Mobile app testing experience (Maestro, native iOS/Android, React Native)
