Salary: USD 250,000 - 310,000 / annual

As Head of Legal, you will be Rillet's first in-house counsel, building the legal function from the ground up and serving as a strategic business partner as the company scales domestically and internationally. You will work closely with the executive team and cross-functionally across all departments.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building Rillet's overall legal strategy, priorities, and operating model as the company scales
- Advising the executive team and Board on strategic, legal, and risk considerations; assessing risk and articulating trade-offs to enable fast, informed decision-making
- Creating scalable frameworks, workflows, and playbooks, including adopting AI tooling to automate contract review and legal research
- Reviewing and negotiating commercial deals (MSAs, order forms, DPAs, SOWs, partner contracts) with the revenue team to balance legal protection and business speed
- Partnering with Engineering, Product, and Design to advise on legal and compliance considerations throughout the product development lifecycle
- Guiding the business on privacy, data protection, and the evolving AI regulatory landscape
- Staying ahead of changing legal, regulatory, and compliance guidance relevant to the business
- Owning corporate governance, including equity administration, financing rounds, and Board matters
- Partnering with the People team on employment matters, hiring policies, and workplace issues
The role is based in San Francisco or New York City with hybrid work expectations (in-office Tuesdays and Thursdays, plus one additional flexible day; certain roles may require additional in-office time).
Requirements:
- 10+ years of experience operating as in-house counsel and within top-tier law firms
- Experience scaling businesses through the 150–500 employee range in high-growth environments
- Generalist legal background with ability to identify and prioritize gaps and exposure areas
- Experience supporting corporate governance, equity administration, and employment matters
- Demonstrated ability to negotiate commercial contracts and push back where necessary
- Operating knowledge of privacy, data protection, AI, and IP transactions
- Pragmatic business partner mindset; ability to clearly communicate risk and trade-offs
- Systems-oriented approach with experience using AI and automation to scale legal work
- Active member of a U.S. state bar; licensed to practice law in California or New York
