Flock Homes is a fintech platform helping the 17 million Americans who own rental properties unlock equity trapped in real estate through a technology-enabled Direct 1031 Exchange platform. The company is backed by top-tier investors including Andreessen Horowitz and Primary Ventures, and has already completed over 320 exchanges, deferring more than $100 million in taxable gains for clients.
As Head of Engineering, you will run the entire engineering function at Flock—managing people, roadmap, architecture, sprints, and contributing meaningfully to the codebase. This is a player-coach role with a clear path to CTO. You will also serve as a de facto product manager, translating business vision into product vision and having the conviction to push back when ideas aren't worth building.
In your first 12–18 months, you will own: (1) Throughput—scaling the core exchange fund infrastructure to handle 5–10x current volume without proportional headcount growth; (2) New Solutions—leveraging existing infrastructure to launch new exchange funds and vehicles for specific regions or asset classes; (3) Flock 2.0 and Distribution—building custom products and integrations for financial advisors and custodial platforms; (4) Go-to-Market Experiments—running fast ship-measure-iterate cycles with the business, accepting that most will fail but need to fail quickly and cheaply.
Your responsibilities include: setting and owning technical direction, architecture, and engineering standards; running sprints and allocating work to keep the team shipping against clear priorities; translating stakeholder asks into requirements and sequencing the roadmap; writing and reviewing code while holding the bar on quality; hiring, developing, and retaining engineers as the team scales; scoping new products and refining business vision into product vision; and working directly with the CEO, COO, acquisitions, investor relations, and operations teams.
Flock operates with a philosophy of excellence everywhere, moving fast on reversible decisions while thinking hard on irreversible ones, and maintaining direct, honest communication. The company is SEC-regulated, so speed must be paired with intention. The culture emphasizes that acceptable work produces an artifact, but excellent work produces an experience and trust.
Requirements: You have led engineers at a growth-stage fintech or financial infrastructure company and are ready to step up with real ownership of technical direction. You remain close to the code—you have written meaningful production code in the last year and want to continue doing so. You have shipped software where correctness mattered (payments, lending, brokerage, infrastructure, or similar domains where a wrong line of code costs real money or trust). You frame problems before solving them and make those around you do the same. You have strong opinions about what should be built and the conviction to argue for them, including with the CEO and COO. You are calm under pressure, able to parse noise from signal, and comfortable context-switching rapidly between product manager, architect, and senior engineer roles. You want to be in the office in person with the team five days a week. The role is not a fit if your last meaningful code was three or four years ago, if you instinctively seek consensus over progress, if you come from a large institutionalized org without small-team experience, or if you're chasing industry trends rather than motivated by Flock's mission.
