Stand is building a new class of global property protection using advanced physics and AI to model catastrophic risk at the asset level and automate underwriting and mitigation. The company is a homeowners insurance carrier focused on serving customers in wildfire and hurricane-prone regions, with a leadership team of successful founders and CEOs from Metromile, PolicyGenius, WePay, and HotelTonight. This role owns catastrophe readiness and emergency response across Stand. The position reports to the Head of Claims and Client Experience and works cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Underwriting, market teams, third-party administrators (TPAs), and field vendors. Key responsibilities include: - Building and maintaining the catastrophe plan across all perils and states, covering activation levels, roles, vendor capacity, regulatory reporting, and customer/broker outreach. Conduct tabletop exercises before each season. - Leading response when catastrophic events occur: calling activation levels, directing daily team calls, managing TPAs and field vendors, briefing leadership, and deploying Stand personnel to insurance villages and affected customers. - Managing claims TPAs day-to-day, including staffing, inventory, escalations, large losses, and payment approvals. Hold TPAs to service standards through regular scorecards, closed-file audits, and remedies. - Owning the Emergency Response Program end-to-end: monitoring active events, determining when properties need monitoring or vendor deployment, and directing remote response. - Partnering with Product and Engineering to automate exposure analysis, deployment recommendations, and customer/broker outreach while maintaining human judgment for critical decisions. - Managing the vendor bench across field response, mitigation, housing, contents, engineering, and independent adjusting. Oversee contracts, standby terms, capacity, and performance reviews. First 30 days: assess current plan, TPA standards, and vendor bench, identifying major gaps. First 3 months: deliver written catastrophe plan approved by leadership and conduct tabletops with each TPA. First year: implement TPA scorecards with remedies, establish vendor bench with standby terms across all active perils and states, deploy automated exposure analysis and outreach for lead peril, and successfully run response through a live event or exercise. This is a build-from-scratch role in a small, fast-moving company with no large team initially. The role requires field presence during events and unpredictable hours during catastrophe season. REQUIREMENTS: - Led property claims through real catastrophe events, calling response, directing adjusters, and maintaining quality under pressure. Hurricane experience strongly preferred. - Managed TPAs or independent adjusting firms: set and enforced service standards, monitored capacity and pricing, ran scorecards that drove behavioral change. - Deep knowledge of state catastrophe reporting requirements and claim-handling deadlines across multiple states. - Ability to run live response from office and field, making sound decisions with incomplete information. - Comfortable building from blank page in small, fast-moving company without existing playbook or large team. NICE TO HAVE: - Wildfire experience. - Scoped automation with product and engineering teams and held to timelines. - Underwriting, inspection, or mitigation experience alongside claims. - Florida or high-net-worth property experience. - Built or run emergency response program previously.
