Zoox is building a purpose-built, fully autonomous robotaxi. The Autonomy Hardware Validation team runs design validation (DV) and production validation (PV) testing to ensure all electronic control units (ECUs) meet requirements across temperature, power, vibration, EMC, and lifetime stress.
As a Hardware Engineer on the Test Development team, you will be a hands-on engineer responsible for getting testing done in the Foster City labs. You will build test setups and automation, run tests, and help identify root causes of failures. You will move between projects as priorities shift, including next-generation vehicle platforms, production validation for the current robotaxi, and cold-weather qualification. You will leverage AI tools and automation to build and run tests faster.
Key responsibilities:
- Build, debug, and maintain test setups for vehicle ECUs, including fixtures, test carts, harnesses, fault injection racks, power supplies, electronic loads, data acquisition systems, and thermal chambers.
- Run electrical, environmental, and reliability tests in the Foster City labs and at local test facilities, documenting results clearly.
- Write test automation and tools in Python; use AI tools to review specifications, test procedures, synthesize results, and accelerate test development.
- Support root cause analysis of test failures in collaboration with validation, design, firmware, and supplier quality engineers; track issues to closure in Jira.
- Identify capacity gaps and work with validation leads to convert validation plans into working test setups and procedures.
This role requires 5 days per week onsite presence in the Foster City, CA office.
Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience in hardware test, hardware validation, or electrical engineering, plus a BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
- Hands-on experience with lab equipment: oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads, DMMs, and data acquisition systems.
- Experience building or modifying test setups (harnesses, fixtures, instrumentation) and reading schematics to debug board-level issues.
- Working proficiency in Python for test automation or data analysis.
- Comfort using AI tools to review documents, synthesize information, and build test tooling, with ability to critically evaluate their output.
- Experience with fault injection, hardware-in-the-loop, or automated test equipment for electronics.
- Experience with automotive validation standards such as ISO 16750, CISPR 25, or ISO 11452, including EMC or cold-weather testing.
- Experience working in Jira, Polarion, or another ALM tool.
