Bedrock Robotics is deploying autonomous systems on heavy construction equipment across the country. The company has raised $350M in two years and achieved the first fully autonomous excavator deployments in construction, with a team including veterans from Waymo, Segment, and Uber Freight.
As a Hardware Engineer, you will design, develop, and validate autonomous hardware systems installed on standard heavy construction machinery—excavators, bulldozers, and wheel loaders. These systems enable equipment to perform earthmoving work on construction sites without a human operator.
Autonomous hardware systems consist of: high-performance ruggedized onboard computers that perform autonomous operation calculations; sensors (cameras, radar, lidar, GNSS) that allow the machine to perceive its surroundings; controllers and interfaces that translate computer decisions into electrical signals operating the machine's hydraulic, steering, and engine controls; and testing equipment (benches, fixtures, instrumentation) to verify components before and after installation.
Key responsibilities include:
- Defining and designing hardware systems, including component-level architecture for autonomous machines and camera/optics design and performance
- Establishing and leading relationships and programs with external vendors to facilitate hardware manufacturing and delivery
- Supporting hardware system verification and validation, working with safety teams to establish and tune requirements and performance metrics for components and systems
- Using industry standard tools and knowledge to test hardware system standards
- Writing reusable, high-quality sensor data analysis and testing automation software
You will work alongside construction veterans and world-class engineers to solve physical-world problems that simulations cannot address. This is a hybrid role based in San Francisco, with the ability to work remotely from within the United States but requiring at least three days per week in the San Francisco office. Regional/national travel up to 15% is required to visit hardware testing sites.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or directly related field
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible, post-baccalaureate experience in designing, integrating, and validating electrical hardware systems
- Experience with high-performance computer systems (x86 or ARM)
- Experience with robotics sensor stacks (lidar, radar, camera, or GNSS)
- Experience with communication protocols and technologies (CAN, LIN, J1939, FlexRay, or Ethernet)
- Proficiency in Python or C++/C/Rust
- Knowledge of standardization tools and organizations (ISO, SAE, ANSI)
- Willingness and ability to travel regionally/nationally up to 15%
