Lead Graphcore's hardware design team responsible for the power, timing, and control circuits that enable the company's AI compute hardware. In this people-management role, you will line-manage hardware engineers, coach their professional development, and align team commitments with capacity. Your team's schematics, component selections, and electrical constraints will provide complete inputs for PCB layout engineers and downstream manufacturing teams.
You'll coordinate technical reviews, investigations, and corrective actions through to closure, working across hardware design, SI/PI, PCB layout, mechanical, thermal, systems, and firmware engineering disciplines. You'll interface with programme management to flag competing priorities early and present practical resolution options. You'll help test and manufacturing teams understand expected circuit behavior and resolve issues during production transition.
The role emphasizes growing your leadership across the full hardware lifecycle by drawing on specialist expertise rather than becoming the sole technical authority. You'll build a more autonomous team whose methods and shared knowledge improve how Graphcore develops next-generation hardware. You'll encourage engineers to challenge assumptions using evidence and specialist advice to resolve difficult trade-offs.
Graphcore is one of the world's leading innovators in AI compute, developing hardware, software, and systems infrastructure for next-generation AI breakthroughs. As part of the SoftBank Group, Graphcore combines deep expertise from AI research specialists, silicon designers, software engineers, and systems architects.
REQUIREMENTS:
- People leadership experience that develops engineers, delegates effectively, and addresses difficult performance issues, with readiness for formal line management
- Experience coordinating engineering delivery with programme management, including estimates, work allocation, dependencies, and capacity planning under schedule pressure
- Strong communication skills that build relationships across disciplines and locations, resolve competing expectations, and secure decisions by explaining risks and trade-offs
- Strong hardware engineering background spanning circuit and schematic development, board implementation, verification, and production transition; engineering degree or equivalent practical experience required
- Understanding of power supplies, sequencing, reset, clocks, digital interfaces, and SI/PI constraints, with judgment about when specialist input is needed
- Experience organizing technical reviews, maintaining traceable design records, and ensuring investigations and corrective actions reach clear conclusions
- Legal right to work in the UK (visa sponsorship not available)
