Adyen is seeking a strategic Governance Lead to manage the Governance pillar within its global Scheme Compliance team. This role combines people leadership with accountability for the company's global governance framework, audit and assessment coordination, internal control mapping and testing, and relationships with card scheme and payment method regulators. You will lead a small globally distributed team, setting direction for how Adyen demonstrates compliance with card scheme and local payment method requirements through effective governance, control assurance, and coordinated external engagement. Key responsibilities include: • Leading and developing a global team across regions, establishing clear responsibilities, priorities, and development opportunities while balancing planned assurance work with incoming scheme requests. • Owning the governance framework by defining and maintaining consistent standards for scheme, debit network, and alternative payment method compliance documentation, control mapping, evidence management, issue tracking, and reporting. • Leading audit and assessment coordination, overseeing Scheme Compliance's participation in scheme and local payment method audits, assessments, and due diligence reviews. • Overseeing control mapping and testing, establishing risk-based testing plans with Internal Controls and pillar leads to ensure control gaps are documented and escalated. • Serving as the global governance point of contact for scheme Risk and Compliance counterparts, connecting regional and subject-matter owners while maintaining a consistent global approach. • Managing scheme communications and requests for information (RFIs), overseeing intake, routing, coordination, and quality review to ensure accurate, timely responses. • Leading recurring scheme governance engagements including weekly business reviews (WBRs), quarterly business reviews (QBRs), and annual meetings. • Partnering with Internal Audit and Internal Controls on assurance activities, supporting independent reviews, and monitoring remediation progress. • Owning committee and board reporting, preparing and delivering Scheme Compliance reporting to committees, boards, and management forums across all regions. • Overseeing the global scheme bulletin intake and update process, ensuring relevant owners assess applicability, establish required actions, and provide evidence of completion. You will work closely with the Brand, Financial, and Data Integrity pillars, Internal Audit, Internal Controls, and operational teams to ensure requirements, findings, and commitments translate into clear ownership, timely action, and transparent management oversight. REQUIREMENTS: • Experienced people leader capable of developing a small, globally distributed team while remaining closely engaged in complex work and stakeholder decisions. • Experienced governance, compliance, risk, or controls professional, ideally within payments, acquiring, financial services, or similarly complex environment. • Skilled in audit and assessment management, requirements-to-control mapping, control testing, evidence evaluation, and remediation oversight. • Familiar with card scheme and payment method requirements, or able to demonstrate experience translating complex external obligations into practical governance and control frameworks. • Credible external representative who can manage sensitive discussions, coordinate responses across functions, and communicate clearly with senior stakeholders. • Comfortable operating across lines of defense with clear understanding of distinction between operational ownership, compliance oversight, and independent assurance. • Structured and pragmatic decision-maker who can prioritize competing demands, challenge constructively, and maintain clear accountability. • Effective written and verbal communicator who can turn detailed findings and requirements into concise reporting and actionable recommendations. • Experienced in translating complex compliance matters into clear committee and board reporting and leading global change-governance processes. • Willingness to travel internationally as needed.
