Salary: USD 140,000 - 260,000 / annual
Substack is building an economic engine for independent creators by providing a direct-subscription publishing platform. The Payments team owns the core systems that power subscription revenue—managing hundreds of millions of dollars in payments while giving creators economic autonomy and direct audience relationships.
As a Full Stack Software Engineer on the Payments team, you will develop and own payment surfaces and backend systems end-to-end, from product concept through implementation, experimentation, and measurement. The team is small with outsized impact, taking on both traditional payments engineering (payment processor integrations, subscription revenue flows) and full-stack feature development (payout systems, subscribe-flow optimization, gift subscriptions, and more).
You will work primarily with TypeScript (Node/Express and React) and Postgres. Experience with payment processors like Stripe is beneficial but not required. The role emphasizes ownership, autonomy, and strong product intuition. You'll ship high-quality solutions and drive measurable impact on Substack's core business model.
Requirements:
