Salary: USD 111,000 - 140,000 / annual
insitro is a physical AI company building machine learning-driven drug discovery and development platforms. The company has raised over $700M and is advancing programs toward clinical trials in metabolic disease and neuroscience.
You'll join the Lab Platform team, which is building a harness for science—an agentic workflow system that lets scientists drive the lab through AI agents. The platform must be agentically accessible (any lab action must be automatable), agentically legible (agents understand data in insitro's context), and humanly verifiable (scientists can audit agent actions).
This is a full-stack role spanning React/TypeScript frontends, Python backends, and integrations with lab instruments, Benchling, and agent runtimes. You'll work directly with machine learning, automation, and biology teams, and spend time in the lab observing workflows before building tools.
Key responsibilities:
- Ship features end-to-end: from scientist conversations through data modeling, UI, and monitoring
- Build agentic tooling and test ideas through prototypes and real users
- Own integrations with instruments, Benchling, and agent runtimes
- Design for provenance and verifiability so scientists can audit agent decisions
- Collaborate across ML, automation, and biology teams
- Participate in code reviews, design docs, and user feedback loops
The role reports to the Senior Manager of Software Engineering and is based in South San Francisco with a hybrid schedule of three days per week in-office.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 2–4+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Working knowledge of AWS or GCP, relational databases, version control, and code review practices
- Product instinct: understanding users and their actual needs
- Willingness to learn the drug development domain (biology background not required)
- Ability to reason about quality vs. speed tradeoffs
- Preferred: LIMS, lab automation, or life sciences domain experience
- Preferred: Experience with LLMs, agent frameworks, or tool/skill design
- Preferred: Familiarity with Django, FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, React, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, Docker, or AWS
