Nametag is building the identity verification and account protection layer companies use to verify the real person behind high-risk workforce actions—from account recovery to identity checks—before attackers can exploit the gap. The company handles government-issued identity documents, selfies, and biometric signals, making data governance and compliance a core technical responsibility. You will own the platform foundations that everything else at Nametag is built on. While most engineering roles ship features, this role owns the substrate: the data model, the Postgres layer, the public APIs customers build against, the multi-region architecture for data residency compliance, and the governance machinery that makes data handling commitments technically enforced rather than aspirational. Key responsibilities include: **Data Layer Ownership**: Own Postgres schema design, migrations, indexing, query performance, and operational health under load. Design data models that make tenant isolation and data classification structural rather than conventional. Execute migrations on live systems without downtime or data loss. **Data Governance**: Implement retention, deletion, and minimization as enforced mechanisms that reach derived data, replicas, caches, and backups. Build access control and audit logging that scope and record access to sensitive data as a byproduct of normal operation. Produce evidence that compliance obligations require directly from systems rather than reconstructing by hand. Partner with security and GRC to turn contractual and regulatory commitments into technical controls. **Multi-Region Architecture**: Design and extend region-aware architecture including routing, storage, replication, and failover. Enforce data residency in the platform so rows that must stay in a region cannot leave through ordinary code paths. Handle operational reality of multi-region systems—consistency, latency, deploys, and debugging region-specific issues. **API Surface**: Design coherent, predictable public APIs. Own versioning, deprecation, and backwards compatibility. Build authentication, authorization, rate limiting, and idempotency behavior production APIs require. **Operations & Enablement**: Operate what you build and debug complex issues across services, data, and infrastructure. Build internal tooling and admin surfaces giving the company visibility into the platform. Improve reliability, observability, testing, and deployment. Review code and raise the technical bar. This is a full stack role with center of gravity in backend and data, but you'll build internal tooling, admin surfaces, and operational dashboards. It suits an engineer who finds correctness under constraint more interesting than shipping the next screen. **Requirements:** - 5+ years building and operating production backend systems - Deep PostgreSQL experience: schema design, query optimization, and migrations on live systems with real data - Strong backend skills in Go, Node.js, Python, Java, or similar, plus enough frontend ability to build internal tooling in React or comparable framework - Experience designing and maintaining APIs used by real customers, including versioning and compatibility discipline - Hands-on cloud experience (AWS preferred), including storage, IAM, and encryption primitives - Experience handling sensitive or regulated data where access control, retention, and deletion were hard requirements - Judgment about correctness: idempotency, safe retries, failure handling, and failure modes under load - Clear communication and good judgment in remote, cross-functional team - Work authorization required: must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship need **Bonus:** - Experience building or operating multi-region or data-residency-constrained systems - Experience with multi-tenant isolation at data layer - Experience with biometric privacy regimes (BIPA, GDPR) as implementer - Experience in SOC 2, ISO 27001, or similarly audited environment - Experience in identity, authentication, account recovery, fraud prevention, fintech, or security products - Strong production incident, observability, or reliability experience
