Hypercubic is building AI systems to understand, reason about, and rearchitect large-scale legacy applications, particularly mainframe and COBOL systems that power critical global infrastructure. The company focuses on the intersection of program analysis, knowledge extraction, and agentic systems applied to enterprise software modernization.
As a Founding Software Engineer, you will work directly with the CTO to design, prototype, and productionize AI-powered systems from first principles. This is a founding role with meaningful ownership over architecture, product direction, and engineering culture.
Key responsibilities include:
- Rapidly prototype new concepts and features to validate ideas before full implementation
- Ship AI-driven features end-to-end, from model interaction to user-facing workflows
- Set early engineering standards around testing, reliability, and code quality
- Translate ambiguous problem statements into concrete experiments, constraints, and working systems
- Lead architecture decisions and long-term technical direction with the CTO
- Collaborate with subject matter experts and customers from various industries (banking, insurance, airlines)
You should be a generalized specialist with strong technical and product taste, comfortable operating across abstraction layers from low-level system reasoning to high-level product UX. You care deeply about your work and product, are comfortable with uncertainty, think in systems and feedback loops, can move fast and slow (prototyping in hours, then building enterprise-grade features), and have a bias for action with a track record in fast-paced environments.
Nice-to-have qualifications include strong testing intuition (TDD, property-based testing), experience building production-grade agentic or autonomous systems, exposure to legacy systems (mainframes, COBOL, compilers, program analysis, HPC), and familiarity with enterprise software constraints.
The role is in-person in San Francisco. The company offers generous health, dental, and vision benefits, PTO, and relocation support. H1B sponsorship is not available, but H1B transfers and OPT are supported.
