As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you'll operate at the intersection of engineering, product, and customer success. This hybrid role splits your time roughly equally between two domains:
**Customer-Facing Work (50%):** Partner directly with Sales and Customer Success on technical engagements, enterprise implementations, and customer onboarding. Debug issues across APIs, integrations, and production systems. Work with some of Numeral's largest customers to understand complex tax workflows and translate them into product improvements. Serve as a trusted technical advisor, explaining technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
**Engineering & Product Work (50%):** Design and build product features, internal tooling, and automations that improve customer experience and engineering velocity. Own engineering projects end-to-end from requirements gathering through implementation and deployment. Improve APIs, integrations, developer experience, and operational tooling. Collaborate closely with Product and Engineering teams to deliver exceptional outcomes.
You'll become an expert in how customers use Numeral and leverage those insights to make the product better every week. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys both solving technical problems with customers and writing production code, with a startup mentality and ownership mindset.
**Requirements:**
- 2–5 years of software engineering experience
- Strong programming skills in JavaScript/TypeScript (Node.js preferred), or another backend language with willingness to learn
- Experience working with SQL databases such as PostgreSQL
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Comfort working directly with customers and explaining technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Ownership mindset—ability to take projects from idea to production
- Startup mentality: comfortable with ambiguity and excited to wear multiple hats
**Nice to Haves:**
- Experience building APIs or backend services
- Familiarity with AWS, Docker, Redis, or modern cloud infrastructure
- Experience with SaaS integrations or enterprise customers
- Background in fintech, accounting, payments, or tax technology
- Experience in early-stage startups
