Salary: USD 130,000 - 220,000 / annual
Column is a developer-first bank and financial infrastructure platform founded by veterans from Plaid, Square, Meta, Blend, and Affirm. The company simplifies fintech banking by offering technology-forward solutions that eliminate hundreds of vendors and middleware layers, creating a safer, more transparent, and less costly banking supply chain.
As Column's first Forward Deployed Engineer, you will define and shape this new role. You'll work directly with customers to understand their problems deeply and help them build new products on Column's APIs. This is a hands-on engineering position where you'll write production-quality code, debug payment flows, design integrations, and spend significant time on-site with customers. You'll gain deep exposure to the full banking stack, from Column's APIs down to the Federal Reserve.
Key responsibilities include:
- Partner with customer engineering teams to design, build, and launch products using Column's banking stack
- Serve as the technical owner for strategic customers from onboarding through launch, unblocking them on architecture, ledgering, reconciliation, and edge cases in money movement
- Write production-quality code that accelerates integrations and evolves into reusable product features
- Identify patterns from field work and translate them into product and platform improvements, collaborating closely with engineering to enhance APIs, documentation, and developer experience
- Advise customers on building safe, compliant, and resilient financial products in a regulated environment
- Represent Column in executive and engineering conversations with customers, building trusted long-term relationships
You'll be based in Column's Presidio office in San Francisco with frequent travel to customer sites across the US and internationally. You'll report directly to the CEO.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Fluency in Spanish, French, or Russian (required)
- Strong engineering fundamentals, ideally with backend systems, APIs, or infrastructure experience
- Product thinking: ability to look past immediate requests to identify underlying problems and optimal solutions for both customers and Column
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to explain complex systems clearly to engineers and executives
- Executive presence and confidence to lead high-stakes customer conversations
- Strong project management skills to run multiple customer engagements simultaneously
- Self-starter mindset comfortable with ambiguity and building processes from scratch
- Experience with payments, banking, or financial infrastructure is a plus
