Etched is building custom hardware and software for frontier AI inference at scale. The company co-designs chips, racks, software, and manufacturing to deliver best-in-class throughput and latency for both prefill and decode workloads, backed by hundreds of millions from top-tier investors.
You will lead the Fleet Software team within the Supercomputing organization, responsible for the software that enables Etched to deploy inference clusters at gigawatt-scale. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll shape how frontier inference hardware is deployed, managed, and orchestrated for customers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and developing the Fleet Software team: setting priorities, hiring and mentoring engineers, and giving team members clear ownership
- Setting architecture and roadmap for fleet provisioning, configuration, updates, and recovery across labs and customer deployments
- Establishing the team's approach to safe software and firmware rollouts, including validation, staged deployment, and handling partial failures
- Guiding design of telemetry and log pipelines, including decisions around storage, retention, and query performance
- Leading development of monitoring, alerting, and analysis tools to help engineers and customers understand fleet behavior and investigate failures
- Partnering with the Node Systems team to define interfaces and validated configurations for managing hardware across the fleet
- Working with deployment teams to support customer environments, including local monitoring and telemetry analysis
- Converting lessons from deployments and incidents into engineering priorities, deciding where to adopt existing tools versus building custom solutions
- Staying hands-on through design reviews, code contributions, and debugging on the team's hardest technical problems
The team builds software for configuration management, safe rollouts, and recovery while partnering across engineering to drive product improvements as production scales at unprecedented speed. You'll also build monitoring and analysis systems that connect signals across the rack, enabling engineers and their agents to investigate failures, spot patterns, and continually improve fleet performance and reliability.
Etched is a fully in-person team in San Jose (Santana Row) that values engineering skills and has no boundaries between engineering and research. All technical staff are expected to contribute to both and work across disciplines.
Qualifications (Must-have):
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including leading projects or managing engineers
- Experience building infrastructure software and owning it in production, including deployments, incidents, and the changes that followed
- Strong background in fleet management, provisioning, configuration, or observability for compute infrastructure or connected devices
- Solid distributed systems and Linux fundamentals; understanding of how systems behave under load, during upgrades, and when components fail
- Strong coding and debugging skills; ability to work through difficult problems with engineers and contribute to implementation
- Experience setting technical direction, mentoring engineers, and getting work shipped across team boundaries
Qualifications (Nice-to-have):
- Telemetry and log pipelines, including storage, retention, and query performance
- Bare metal servers, accelerator clusters, robotics, or other hardware fleets
- Firmware updates, hardware diagnostics, and automated recovery
- Software that runs in customer environments as well as internal infrastructure
