Empirical Health is seeking an experienced AI Software Engineer to serve as the technical owner of a luxury travel company's internal business systems. The client operates a small but high-performing team managing custom trips and events, with Quickbase currently serving as the central hub for business logic, workflows, and operational knowledge. You will lead the design and implementation of the next generation of their internal operating platform—a modernized layer that connects and improves existing systems while adding enhanced workflows, automation, scheduling, integrations, dashboards, and internal tools. The goal is not to replace Quickbase wholesale, but to thoughtfully understand current operations, preserve what works, simplify what can be improved, and modernize the platform without disrupting daily business. Key responsibilities include: - Mapping and documenting existing Quickbase applications (tables, relationships, formulas, reports, dashboards, roles, permissions, Pipelines, workflows) - Collaborating with sales, operations, and leadership to understand business processes and surface undocumented rules - Maintaining and improving Quickbase as the new platform develops, covering data structure, formulas, permissions, data quality, deduplication, auditability, and performance - Building workflows and automations for intake, follow-up, handoffs, approvals, reminders, deadlines, pre-trip and post-trip processes, recurring checks, reporting, and exception handling - Designing and building integrations between Quickbase and CRM, email, telephony, transcription, document, finance, vendor, and travel services systems - Creating modern dashboards, role-specific workspaces, and web-based tools to streamline daily work - Applying AI selectively to practical tasks such as transcription, extraction, classification, summarization, search, and drafting - Working securely with sensitive client data using access controls, credentials management, logging, monitoring, audit trails, and staging environments The role begins part-time and is designed to grow into a full-time, long-term position as the roadmap expands. You will work with a remote team and have strong overlap with Pacific Time. Qualifications and Experience: Must haves: - Strong relational database skills, including data modeling, keys, relationships, normalization, and data integrity - Meaningful experience building or maintaining a structured business system; Quickbase is strongly preferred, but deep experience with Salesforce, another low-code platform, a custom ERP/CRM, or a complex relational application is acceptable if you can learn Quickbase quickly - Experience with formula logic, multi-step automation, scheduled processes, workflow rules, and cross-system integrations - Real API engineering experience: REST, JSON, webhooks, authentication, data mapping, error handling, and retries - Strong experience with at least one production programming language (Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or PHP) - Modern web development skills (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and experience with a frontend or full-stack framework - Sound production judgment: testing changes, planning for failure cases, protecting live data, and using staging or controlled environments - Practical experience with modern AI or language-model APIs (deep AI specialization not required) - Ability to explain technical trade-offs clearly to non-engineers and work independently with a remote team - Working hours with strong overlap with Pacific Time - Advanced English required - Familiarity with AI tools Nice-to-haves: - Quickbase certifications or a portfolio of Quickbase applications - Speech-to-text or transcription pipelines - Operational reporting and analytics - CRM integrations and data migration - Background in travel, hospitality, events, logistics, or another operations-heavy service business - Security or privacy work involving customer information
