Salary: USD 212,000 - 274,000 / annual
Justworks is seeking an Engineering Manager for the Product Foundations team, which owns core platform capabilities including reporting and analytics, document management, training, calendars, communications, and organizational data access. This role is a player-coach position balancing hands-on technical work with people leadership.
You will lead and scale a high-performing backend engineering pod, acting as a technical mentor and strategist. The team builds intuitive, reliable, and scalable experiences that customers depend on for accessing information, completing workflows, and managing their organizations. The Product Foundations team recently led development of the company's first AI-powered product experience and focuses on balancing mission-critical stability with innovative solutions.
Key responsibilities include building and overseeing a team of software engineers, coordinating projects, setting priorities, motivating engineers to create and maintain features, and bridging the gap between technical and non-technical teams. You will champion the integration of AI to drive feature innovation and operational efficiency. The role emphasizes a 50/50 split between people management and hands-on technical guidance.

REQUIREMENTS:
- 7+ years of experience as a software engineer working on production web applications
- Minimum 1 year of engineering management experience with proven track record building and growing teams
- Strong technical leader comfortable with 50/50 split between people management and hands-on technical guidance
- Solid experience leveraging AI technologies to build modern features and optimize system maintenance
- Exceptional cross-functional communication skills with ability to lead and collaborate across technical and non-technical stakeholders
- High levels of empathy and interpersonal skills
- Core experience with Go, Microservices, Kubernetes, AWS, and Event-Driven Architecture
- Core web technologies knowledge: data structures, data stores, algorithms, distributed systems, and common patterns
- Technologies: Golang, Ruby on Rails, Javascript, MySQL, Kafka, AWS, Git, Memcache, Redis, ElasticSearch, Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes, CircleCI, DataDog
